Selous I am looking at a Tikka, what's your view on barrel life on 6mm say CM vs 6.5?You can do an awful lot with a Tikka T3 in 6mm XC, 6mm Creed or 243 with a fast twist barrel suitable for 105-115 grain bullets. Slap in an MDT chassis and you are golden !
Thanks for that - I am more interested in "competing against myself" and improving so 6.5 probably makes sense6.5 will give you double the barrel life of a 6mm
Most of the 6’s are overbore and will wash the throat out in 1500-2000 rounds or less
If you are in stages of 10-12 rounds in a 90 second cycle then the barrel will get very warm very quickly - a recipe for replacement barrel in a significantly reduced round count.
My point is you need to have the budget for replacement barrel if you are entering many comps per year

I haven't shot on a formal range for 30 years but I used to be quite "handy" in the olden days - I fancy a go at this but my knees may disagree! Well done to your friend - what would a set up like that cost and does the "breathing on" get a noticeable improvement (excuse the ignorance!)?If it helps
Rifle handling and shooting fundamentals are far more important than shiny “must have kit”
A very good friend, who I built a 6mm BR for on a Howa I breathed on in the latter part of 2023 entered his first ever prs type match at a Bisley today
Howa action, Lothar barrel, oryx chassis
Came tenth in open class
Respect for having a go and coming good

I defer to @Ronin on this one, after all he builds all my rifles!! I use a 6.5x47 and like it but the 6mms are amazing ballistically. My daughter is running a 6mm XC and really likes it. Still on the first barrel so watch this spaceSelous I am looking at a Tikka, what's your view on barrel life on 6mm say CM vs 6.5?
What’s your thoughts on 7mm-08 or 7mm-08AI for PRS….The howa was rebarrelled by me in 6BR with a med Palma contour barrel
I bushed the firing pin as the BR is small rofle primer and can be susceptible to pierced primers if the pin hole diamter is large ,,,,
Anyway not a job for the faint hearted but cures this issue
Once through proof tge barrelled action was put in a standard Oryx chassis and I think the trigger spring was changed to lighten the two stage unit a little more than standard
Other than that, decent load development and some practice drills - numerous foxes and several hundred rounds practice
I note you mention issues with knees - I am waiting for hip
PrS can place you in some arkward positions for shooting the stage
Yoga also helps![]()
i'll give you mine , despite you not asking meWhat’s your thoughts on 7mm-08 or 7mm-08AI for PRS….
Think I bought your MDT black/blue stock?I've just retired my 6 Dasher barrel (a Phoenix cut rifle barrel) from competitions after its final match last weekend. It's done 2,340 rounds and is still shooting very well and velocities are still consistent, but I know I am getting close to being on borrowed time with it.
I do know that one of the top competitors in the UK and Ireland is still competing with his dasher barrel at over 2,800 rounds and won the Irish PRS match last weekend with that barrel also. Its also still grouping well and velocities are consistent!
I know of one guy in the US shooting a 7mm, its a 7mm SAW. He's the only competitor in the Top 200 in the PRS in the US shooting a 7mm.
6 dasher is still the most popular, but there is definitely a trend towards 25 cals in the US at the moment, especially for matches out west where wind and other weather conditions are much harsher.
Yes, that would have been us shooting the PRS match.I was at Bisley last Sunday and saw (and heard!) lots of riflemen on the 1000 yard firing point, doing something strange - was this PRS? Lots of huge scopes, no walnut to be seen. Seemed like everyone used a muzzle brake, hence the noise??

Yeah, over here some are still running the 6mm bandwagon. It's mostly the eastern folks though, since they have (usually) shorter ranges than those of us out west. Out here I'm starting to see a lot more 25 Creedmoors. I dabbled with the 6mm CM, and well, I didn't like it. I'm back running a 6.5CM for now. I may go down the 25CM rabbit hole (and a good way to use all the 6mm CM brass I have), but I've got other irons in the fire right now.I don’t know of any competitor using a 7mm (though I’m sure someone will be for the hell of it)
If you can control recoil then it may be an option (as in your rifle handling fundamentals are good)
You would certainly find a healthier splash on target or in sand berm to indicate hit or miss
The trend towards 6mm still appears healthy
Though some may be looking at 25/47 or similar wildcat of quarter bore if there is availibilty of suitable bullet here
A 7mm May be better suited to the hunter style matches - the closest being UK Rifleseries at Eskdalemuir
