Thou shalt also zero (and check zero) with 10 shot groups, since 1-3 shots that most people are using do not represent the natural dispersion of shots adequately. Think it like this: if you shoot 10 shot group, any 3 shots that are closest together or farthest apart, are viable 3 shot groups. Also the rightmost 3 shots and leftmost 3 shots represent a viable 3 shot group, with no wandering of zero.
BTW it doesn't matter if rail or rings are "aftermarket", but they have to be good quality and like Clive said you need to meticuously follow the process of putting the scope on.
