Dog had a close call on sunday

Glad to hear the dog is on the mend sinbad!

We had a similar thing happen with one of our moose dogs last year, it collapsed and started having a seizure a few km's away from the nearest footpath or road and in real hilly, rocky and thick terrain. We really though we were going to lose him but after a few minutes he came round, luckily I was with a friend and we managed to get him up on my shoulders and I carried him a couple of km's to the road where the owner was waiting to drive him to the vets.

Turned out to be some sort of infection, (don't know the exact details) but luckily he got the treatment he needed and is doing well now!

I am so glad he is on the mend. Well done carrying him all that way too. My spaniel can run himself into over heat and bears a lot of watching this time of year to keep him hydrated and cool now have him clipped twice a year. it does make him a bit shivery on early wildfowling trips however. The blocking of trails with big boulders is an issue for everyone in an emergency and we find our path obstructed by an immovable ton of stone where we could often get straight up to the incident in the 4x4. Its another instance of the many paying the price for the irresponsible few. Coded locks are the way forward in my view then a call to the police could get a vehicle barrier opened easily for a particular incident by anyone with good reason. Hope he continues to recover Tom

Your not clear on the diagnoses , Lymes disease don't see it . Heat exhaustion can cause these signs, which come on in seconds, had it happen to Springer's.

One you could look at is Vestibular disease a couple of the signs are dog falling over, convulsing, ticking of the eyes etc recovery can take a while .

But your saying he is coming back to health so more like heat exhaustion one to watch in the future it takes no prisoners as you could read in the news lately with the military guys on the fan dance it can kill days later with renal failure .

Hydration asap is a must dog or human .

Adder bites in dogs are 99% fatal if not treated ASAP, I seen on dog in Argyllshire didn't last 20 mins ,bite in the face its head ballooned instantly airways closed end ex .not a pleasant site .

The vet suspects that Griff was out of sorts before I took him out (running a fever!) and the exertion climbing the hill caused his body temp to soar and that caused him to collapse with Heat stroke/ exhaustion. even after 4hrs his body temp was still 40deg+ supporting this theory.
He has improved all week so things are looking up, Nothing like this has ever happened to him before so I really hope it is just heat exhaustion.
Other than the white cell count being high, all other blood and urine tests are normal, blood sugar levels ok and no sign of heartworm or toxins.
Ill give him a couple of weeks off and fingers crossed that will be the end of it,I would hate to have to retire him just as he maturing.
Many thanks for the kind words and support guys.
Paul
