Dogs mandatory for stalkers?

Given that we are likely to see a significant increase in wounded deer over the next few years, thanks to BASC, would it be sensible to specify in the same legislation that all stalkers must, by law, be accompanied by a deer dog that is trained to a common minimum standard?

Personally I would say yes, ( or have access to one local) , but I only started shooting as it was an addition to catch more with the dog I was working at the time. Unless the dog not welcome or I need additional room in the truck then I always have a dog with me when shooting.

Lets just put it out there now, Anyone who's personal circumstances don't allow them to own a dog must be banned from stalking immediately!

I’m looking for a GWP at present. No joy yet but I hope to be fully equipped before Carl’s law is passed. Unlike his berg, it’s probably not the best law in the world.

Please no more rules and regulations, when will it stop, minimum deer dog training? Seriously in 20 years of stalking, I can only recall 3 or 4 roe deer that I couldn't find and needed to come back with a dog. A larger rifle, thermal and higher shoulder shooting has helped.

My 3 yr old GWP will be mated when she comes In. Due very soon. I’m keeping a bitch and will do my best to sell the rest(counting chickens!) to stalkers at realistic price. You will have to prove you have an FAC and deer perm 1st 😉

Do please keep me posted! That sounds like a good acid test for ownership and a sensible approach to finding them a home. I’m after a dog with good hunting genes so one from a member here would be ideal. When does she come into season?

All kidding aside i feel there will be a lot of wounding in Scotland as the legislation will ring many changes. BIGGEST % buy lamp and Thermal. As yet no specs on what quality of thermal so i can just imagine the cowboys out there with £50 Chinese knock offs.

😂 1., I did not start the thread, just replied,
2 I said it have access to one locally ,so if they are not dog minded or can’t have one they can still stalk,
I believe that are rules in Germany etc 👍

Does that mean if you were a poor shot in the first place ( Failed your DSC1 target test say) you would require 2 dogs in the new system

I'm pretty new to non-toxic, but I'm not sure it will cause widespread wounding, bullet design and expansion has come a long way and most are reporting reasonable results. Yes, smaller calibres like 243 will have even more odds stacked against them for red deer. But put it another way - over a few years its cheaper to buy a bigger rifle than a dog!

Is this a ploy to sell some even more expensive common deer standard approved puppies?
