DSC 1 Should there be more content

Jimbo, This isn't a policion's forum. "I don't see anyone delaying their stalking career by having to pay £800 for qualification? Have you an example where this has actually happened, or are you just surmising?
MS
Just answer the question truthfully!
Really ?? The way you and your dsc chums avoid questions I'd have thought it was ! Yes I know quite a few who can't afford to go on syndicates they'd like to because of minimum dsc 2 quad first aid etc in fact a couple who I let on my own ground for free wouldn't be able to keep their facs if not because although stalking for 20 years plus ( a lot longer than yourself isn't it or ms ?) they couldn't afford the " qualifications " to get their own ground now that everyone's shouting for bits of paper ! Thank god for landowners that still value competence over " qualifications " spleen ID anyone ?

Couldn't afford or couldn't attain? Competence or incompetence? Now that you have vented your spleen once again and complained to people far more qualified than you or your mates, why not pay your £160 (less than half the cost of a highseat) and test yourself? I can't be the only one on here who has suspicions about your competence. It can't just be the money holding you back surely? You have 10,000 acres to 'play on'. Whilst not a huge bit of ground it should be enough to complete 3 DSC2 stalks on provided you're able to do your bit that is? Plenty have done it on less! I have proved my competence and have quite a few years experience of doing things correctly remember. It's easy to talk the talk Jimbo but can you walk the walk? Currently it's all your hearsay!
Land owners who are brave enough to let stalkers on their land based on nothing more than plenty of chat are getting rarer. Who knows what's around the corner? Don't come on here crying when someone pulls the rug from under you will you? It can happen to anyone and especially those who most think that it can't happen to them. I've seen it happen first hand!

Gents, we need to stand united. I think both sides have some valid points re DMQ arbitrated qualifications. Not all need them, more may need them in the future depending on how poorly BASC represents us. Let's rather rally together and use our common love of deer management to be that which galvanises us to fight for the important stuff.

Ha ha I've no desire to prove anything to you especially or to anyone else it would be a complete waste of my time and money , why would I ? There's no gain at all for me in doing it , trust me pal I'll have plenty of stalking don't you worry including a nice bit just around the corner from you

Thought not.

Thought not !
Why would I want to take a considerable pay cut to work for BASC anyway? What a daft question. Why don't you apply for a job working for them? What's BASC got to do with this thread anyway? You're losing the plot jimbo .:offtopic:

why did they need it to get fac ? That's not the law and when dsc came out we were told it wouldn't be used for that purpose, the thing is it's been pushed by " deer managers " such as your self for so long that flds are now using it to grant facs , job preservation for people like yourself yes but not lawful in the slightest ...
funny how you can say that to many stalkers 800 would be no stumbling block , your very vocal protege posted earlier that stalking can be done on a very small budget , now being a " deer manager " like yourself obviously he's correct , however to consider £800 pounds pocket change and also be on a small budget seems a little at odds don't you think ?
It is fairly simple really, they need to show good reason to possess a deer calibre firearm. I think one chap had no experience at all with firearms was told by his FEO that his application would require some level of credibility or words to that effect. Why would any sensible individual grant a FAC with a high velocity rifle to someone with no experience and nowhere to use it??
Others were required to gain the qualification by land owners or to have any chance of joining a syndicate.
Still not sure where you are getting this £800 fee from?:???: I don't remember saying anywhere "that to many stalkers 800 would be no stumbling block"?

Ok this thread seems to be going off course a bit. Whether you agree to Level 1 or 2 or do not makes little or no difference to me or anyone else really. Its a matter of personal choice, at the moment.

If you have plenty of stalking then you should consider yourself lucky. Its hard enough to get and easily lost as well. I have seen many people argue the point about these courses, why I DONT know, they are here to stay and in my opinion rightly so now. There are a lot of new people getting into stalking and they should all undertake the course in my opinion. Anywhere else within Europe they would have to take a test, some of them over months and paying a great deal more money.

I have also seen a lot of people take the course and come out of it much wiser, more educated and glad they did it. I have never had anyone say different.

There will always be those that cannot see the value of the courses, don't need them, cant be asked to do them, they are too expensive (really try Germany or Austria, Holland if you think Level 1 is expensive) see no benefit in them, or don't want to take them in case they fail? That's your prerogative, on the other hand don't knock those that have put the time in to undertake them. If they make it compulsory you may find yourself at the back of a long long Q.

Either way can we cut out the slanging match on this thread, its not needed and for the original OP its not what he asked for.

This is pretty much what my FEO told me and it makes perfect sense. I am getting in to stalking on my own and unless I can find a mentor I’m in for a steep learning curve. A course such as DSC1 is a good start and even if it were mandatory I’d be getting off very lightly compared to the regulations in places such as Germany.

Most newcomers to a sport, hobby or discipline benefit from tuition. I honestly would not expect and nor would I want to be turned loose ‘cold’ in the countryside with a shiny new .308. I’ve only had the pre-study notes a few days and have already learned from them, I’m really looking forward to the rest of it.

Good luck PaulCat. You don't know how much there is to learn until you get started. It really is a huge subject where DSC1 touches on lot's of things that are big subjects in themselves. It whets your appetite to learn more. If you can get a mentor it would certainly help you with the basics. Attending the course will probably teach you more than you need to know to pass it. Good instructors with lots of knowledge coupled with like minded students made mine worth every penny. It's also worth getting on BDS training days, UKSHA training days and the like. The more you put in the more you get out and the more you will enjoy the journey.

If you want controversial - I have even paid my sub-contractors whilst I witnessed their DSC level 2 stalks! I can confirm monkey spanker is true to his word and one of the more generous sd members he witnessed 2 of my stalks foc ,he has introduced novices to Stalking without taking a penny and when many who organise Cull days on estates charge he does not this isn't the action of a selfish man out to get all he can from Stalking .
There is a lot of sharks out there I'm lucky to have met many that arnt through the SD
Qualifications don't make good human beings for sure but the ones we're talking about make more informed responsible stalkers and Mike after that brown noseing I'll expect first dibs on where I'm going fri eve

replying to the initial post, should the dsc 1 test be to a standard to be expected, ie a real grollach not say a dvd, as a example ??

How would you standardise that? What species would you use? Male or female? Would you do a suspended gralloch, or a ground gralloch?
A suspended muntjac gralloch in a larder down South is a very different technique to a minimum hill gralloch on a red deer in Scotland. Both are valid methods. You can't teach everything practical in a theoretical environment. Most vocational practices can only experienced in a relevant environment.

Thanks baguio. One of the problems that I’ve already encountered is knowing who to believe when asking a question. Ask three stalkers, get five answers! :-D

On reading through, & having a good think about the original question, I reckon a real larder visit & see touch , smell experience would be the dogs doo dads, but, not every course provider can be situate near enough to a larder to visit.
