That is unusual. Antler hardening is normally linked to a rise in testosterone levels.
I believe antler growth in does is usually down to an abnormality a hermaphrodite for example when its possible to have an ovary and also testicular tissue as I understand it the greater the amount of testicular tissue the greater the chance of the hardening and cleaning of antlers.
However I am no expert in this field and Morena may be the best person to explain it.
However it seems that from time to time antlered does are found that to all intents and purposes appear to be normal, again needs someone with more knowledge than me to explain.
What I can say is that of the three that I have had two had spikes around ten centimetres long both were clean and hard both appeared to be normal females as far as genitals were concerned, but it is possible that they were hermaphrodites.
The third was more interesting it was shot by a client in mid April it had a normal six point head though quite spindly in hard antler and clean, again genitals appeared normal and on gralloching was found to be carrying twin foetuses
I should add she was a young doe

does that 'grow' antlers don't have nuts so the proper hormone changes won't be in place to shed velvet normally, this is a bit like a perruque in that respect so unusual growth and development rather than any form of regular 'head' should be the norm. Or so I would have thought!

Do bucks and does have different colour fur during the winter?
I watched 2 today for quite a while on the way to work and one which I thought was a doe had a beautiful light chestnut coat and the other was much darker and had patches, like it was moulting. I think this was a buck although it had no antlers but I'm sure I could see the pedicles. Unfortunately my binos are not great and they were in amongst some bushes.
I've seen these in the same area a few times now so I'm assuming they are a mating pair that are residing in the bushes next to the field,

hi i have been in contact with the forestry commision and the scottish national heritage for a while now and both of them admit that you do not need these dsc level 1/2 and are both saying that you need to be fit and competant to shoot deer on what is really our own ground i have stated that the police and the goverment have made you fit and competant when they gave you a licence which they both agree with and also agree that the goverment has not made it law to have these level 1/2 so who is passing these laws as i would like to know who made the testers of these 1/2 levels fit and competant .

What a ridiculous post.... The police have made you nothing other than a fac holder..
Please explain how on recieving your fac you are now fit and competent in identifying potentially diseased deer or how you are after opening the envelope fit and competent in gralloching a deer.
Ofcourse you can be mentored etc without taking either level 1/2 but if you think all those opening a fac envelope are fit and competent you are sadly mistaken....

Muntjac moult twice a year, like other deer species in the UK. This time of year they should be in winter coat still (ours still are) though from what you've described it sounds like yours are already changing into summer coat. The patches are typical of the spring moult, which ends up with deer looking like real scruffy buggers! If one was a buck then it should have had antlers - ours are clean already - unless it was very young.

Thanks mate I'll try and get a couple of pics up as they seem to reside there. There were defo no antlers so it may have been 2 does then. I'm not allowed to shoot deer on this perm but will use it as stalking practice to get close enough for a snap or two hopefully

Many thanks - I'd definitely be interested to see any photos. It's always interesting to hear about how deer are behaving differently across the country. It's one of the things that makes them so fascinating.
