DSC1 safety assessment

Hi Guys

Been revising for my DSC1 course in August. Big thanks to whoever created the DSC1 app for the iPhones been revising everyday to and from work using the dsc1 manual to find the answers as help me memorise a lot.

Anyways there’s a section “safety assessment” where you put your steps in the correct order.. (I.e showing your friend your rifle, or going around a obstacle) but in the dsc1 manual it says “demonstrate” so my question is on the actual exam would I demonstrate these safety measures or would I be listing what to do in order.

Generally speaking you don't need to do the safety questions in the right order.

If you're simulating crossing an obstacle then there is a logical order.

If it's a question without an actual demonstration I don't believe it matters.

Usually a demonstration with a fake gun
Tends to be a bit "show me, tell me"

So you talk through what you are doing while you do it
"I'm checking the chamber is clear" etc

Unless the order is critical (e.g. check the gun before handing it over) they didn't seem bothered about order and were generally amenable to you having a think and run through the steps at your own pace and order

On my DSC1 I used my rifle and the candidates on the course without a rifle were loaned an estate rifle.. it took the form of a walk around a set route stopping to carry out the different scenarios. Eg I want you to show and explain crossing this fence where you would narrate what you were doing and why whilst actually crossing a fence.
Another question I was shown a number of deer targets and asked if you would or would not take the shot explaining your reasoning.
It is more a case of understanding not memorizing the answers keep it basic and logical and you will be alright.

Ye I have seen this section on YouTube I think I’ll be fine with that.. pretty much straight forward.

I’ll be taking my own .243, zero’d in at 100 yards but I heard it’s 100 meter the prone shot so might need to do final adjustments before

Do not worry you should check zero there before you shoot.
just Keep calm and it ll go okay I can speak with experience here, zeroed okay then totally messed up my first Attempt through sheer nerves self imposed pressure. There is no need just listen to what you are told you will be fine. Just practice all the positions sitting ,prone, off sticks and bipod practice practice practice.

I’m confident with prone and knees but have no experience with sticks, been practicing stick in my garden using a air rifle lol

You’re welcome and I’m glad you’re liking the app!
I actually had the same conversation with Martin Edwards from BASC, as he pointed out they’re not concerned with the order, they just want you to list them.

Just a little background on why I set it up this way…
The problem I had originally was that there’s limited space on screen and some sections of the safety assessment have 4+ answers.
So I couldn’t fit everything on the screen and keep the font at a legible size.
There was one long answer and 3 short ones. The longest was always the correct one, so by ordering them it makes you read everything and take it all in.

I did introduce the study mode where you click the icon in the top right of the safety awareness section and you can just see the answers.
I found having someone quiz me on those was beneficial.

Maybe it’s time to try a different approach though?

I’m hoping to pad out the visual ID section a bit more when I get a chance as well.

Not seen your photos - I used the DSCtraining.org website when I did mine. But doubt anyone's system could have worse photos than the actual DSC1 sets

My DSC1 went along the lines of Dave's as well. Go on a walk with an assessor whilst carrying the estate (or own) rifle. As we walked, I got asked to either explain or demonstrate how to perform the various safety questions. There were 4 deer target set up along the walk and was asked would I take the shot - was also asked to give a reason (skylined/uncertain backstop etc).

Don't fret about the shooting test. I got to practice with the estate rifle the week before hand, I seem to remember that I lined up the vertical of the scope to the back of the front leg, horizontal with the bottom of the tail stub (doesn't show a full tail) and was spot on every time. Feel free to inspect the target before hand and see if that helps you... The target circle is fairly generous so long as you remember where it is.

I need to practise with some DSC1 targets, I’ll go to my gun club and shoot out at there 100 yard mark (I know test is at 100 meters) but difference should be minimal

Plus learn the rough locations of both circles to the body parts.
