Eley subsonic bullet performance

Just thought I would post the findings of an eley subsonic hollow point 40gn bullet that I happened to pull out of a rabbit last night. Never had one stop in the carcass before so thought I would take some photos and weigh the head too on the off chance anyone is interested!

The bullet retrieved had expanded perfectly, mushrooming nicely with 100% weight retention...if only all bullets were as good! Needless to say rabbit died perfectly too!

I have twice recovered the sections from the CCI Segmented subsonics, but didn't think to weigh them.

nice one,i dont expect it would of been quite the same if you hit bone,i bet there was still a serious amount of bruising under the skin,them eley subs shoot demon in my cz 452,my fav caliber

I shot a fox in the head and recovered the bullet just under the surface of the mud and it hadnt mushroomed as much as that

Somewhere I have a recovered Winchester sub bullet that was found just under the skin when I peeled the rabbit. It's the only one I ever recovered from an animal. Sometimes these things just happen.

It isn't always how the bullet looks, it's what it does. This is Aguila's version of the Eley HP (Identical priming, velocity, and accuracy) as marketed by PMC. The 5# block of clay was shot at 25M and sectioned with a length of wire.~Muir

The bullet entered frrom the left. I tested a number of subs in this manner but th ephotos are on a external hard drive that won't respond to my requests, dammit.

They hit very hard and kill well, but they do still ricochet, but probably not as much as standard CCI Subs. I would like to think that having broken up though that the sections wouldn't ricochet as far/fast.

I don't have any problems with the accuracy but Eley subs (hole on hole out to 40+ yards) do seem to leave a very dirty barrel, especially in comparison with their match eps. Never really considered using other brands as eley have always ben heralded as the best.

eley are my favourite subs but I have been much more enamoured with so called hyper velocity rounds this past year- they use a lighter bullet (33 grain I think) and perhaps a longer case/shorter bullet ? Muir will tell us I suspect but the Remington yellow jacket works well for me. My neighbour uses cci stingers.. They all seem to leave my barrel dirty. I too would like to see the pics.

Oly: If I can get that drive to work, I'll post the set.

Devonoak: The CCI Stingers and the Aguila Super Maximum both use a longer than normal case, of that I am certain. Most other "hyper" velocity rounds use a standard length casing and a lighter bullet. I shoot more "fast" 22LR rounds than subs these days as noise isn't an issue and may of these standard "high velocity" rounds avoi d many of the pitfalls of sub-sonics like barrel-time and faulty action cycling in autos.

The really fascinating rounds are the Hyper Heavyweights, as I call them: The CCI Velocitor and the Aguila Interceptor. Both use 40 grain bullet at high speeds. The CCI does 1430 fps and the Interceptor clocks at over 1500 fps (despite being marketed at 1470 fps). Both of these will destroy vermin. With the Interceptor I made 26 consecutive one-shot kills on cottontails at ranges from 20 yards to 130 yards. This was field shooting, much of which was off hand. Impressive to say the least. I am a big believer in subs, and I tolerate light hyper velocity rounds, but when it absolutely has to be killed with authority, either of these 40 grain speed demons is what I grab. Too bad the Aguila isn't readily available in your neck of the woods...~Muir

i tried them 60gr aguila subs and they were worst subs ive ever used,not to say they wont shoot in another rifle,my cz452 wouldnt group at all,6 inch groups lol

At what range? You do know that the bullet was designed for a 1:9" twist law-enforcement rifle, right? The 1:16" twist of your CZ is far too slow for that long bullet at 925 fps. My CZ's will shoot them well until I reach 50 yards or so, then I see evidence of yaw. I have a rifle set up for that ammo, with the accompanying scope with stadia regulated for that cartridge. On a still day I can hit a Coke can at 200M with it using the internal compensator with no adjustment from my 25M zero. It's quite a rig: quiet and deadly.~Muir

40yds ish,was 7 or 8 years ago,a mate gave me some to try,he had same problem as me,them eley subs are great,my cz will do 0.5 inch groups at 70yds.
