Isabel Wentzel of the National Council of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA), South Africa, was allowed to observe the hunt, as was an official from the Limpopo Environmental Affairs Department, and she started crying because game animals were shot as was the former game manager.

Perhaps they had businesses to protect these antis have no compunction is targeting them in their home towns just like they did with the dentist

Driven hunting has been happening since time immemorial. Stone age peoples with simple weapons would drive animals over cliffs or into traps. In dense woodland / vegetation the time and effort required to stalk and find animals is not productive means of harvesting. Across Europe driven hunting has been the preferred method of harvesting game - you concentrate all your efforts in one go with many hunters, beaters etc and flush the game out of cover. How ethical is it is a matter of debate, and frankly its probably more of a question of how it is carried out.

A properly organised driven shoot respects the game, the game is moved forward carefully and in a manner which allows clean kills to be made. There will be pickers up, trackers on hand to dispatch anything that is cleanly killed as quickly as possible. Game animals are typically prey animals, and are constantly alert to danger and does a beater tapping a stick or a dog cause any more stress than the presence of a big cat, fox or sparrow hawk. And you tend to only have a few days of driven, whereas with normal hunting you may well have a constant level of disturbance. In the case cited above 10 hunters shooting 20 head of game on one day as opposed to 10 days with a different hunter on each day shooting 2 animals a day - you have to weight this up.

What I don't think is ethical is a bunch of .................... all paying huge amounts of money to blaze away with no regard to the quarry, and then just leave animals and birds to rot away, or even worse to be buried in a pit. Fortunately, whilst this does happen, I don't think it is a regular occurence.

Whats is clear in my mind is that hunting can be a very ethical and sustainable form of land use and in many many cases has kept large areas of land from being developed - and developed land has little room for nature.
