Ex Asda Van Deer Chiller

Hey Guys,

I have just purchased the back of an Ex Supermarket chiller/freezer van. It is in perfect condition and has a 16 Amp plug on it to keep the fridge/freezer running overnight. It was all running when connected to the van but since being removed it doesn't seem to want to run. I'm guessing something to do with the cables being cut that connect it to the van? Anyone ever converted one before who could shed some light on this?

Cheers, Ieuan

p.s annoyingly I cant add any photos for some reason, I will try again soon

I know other people in the same predicament. Cables and / or pipework get chopped through when it's removed from the van, and it ends up not being worthwhile repairing it.

Same happened to us, it just gets used for storage now

I spoke to GAH today who make the Aircon unit. The guy was actually really helpful and is helping me fix it! I may have to buy a new temperature control unit and wire it up is all.
That’s why it won’t run - in the van cab will have been a control unit, without that & the wiring connecting it to the chiller the latter just becomes a boat anchor!

I’m afraid ‘selling’ old fridge bodies and Coke chillers is often just a disposal solution which would otherwise cost a significant amount of money. I know a few people who have been caught out (myself included!) and ended up having to pay to dispose of commercial refrigeration equipment.

Also, before you commit to buying and restoring any sort of older chiller make sure you consider the running costs, some of them use a crazy amount of electricity.

With what I have spent over the years on coke chillers. I would have been better off buying a new unit.
Disposal. I have learnt to break them down and take them to the recycling centre.
I still have one as storage for my electric drills ,saw, rat poison, etc. That's all it's good for .

I was given a re-gassed s/hand unit in 2014 by Pete (rip) still going strong but seals are going. Still fires up in a second.
Use it for pigeons as have a new one also the small walk in.

I have a double sliding door type I bought off miffy on here. Working great .
Keith sikadog over the years kept the other 3 working . Till it was not viable to fix them
