Hello,

I am looking to buy a selection of non lead bullets. It seems availability is quite limited in terms of factory ammunition.

I normally shoot federal power shock 150gr in my .308 and find them to be excellent, especially for the price.

Federal also make a copper version, 150gr in .308 which are available from bush wear, has anyone tried these? If so, how have they preformed?

Not used copper yet myself. But this would be my preferred starting point as I too shoot Federal if I'm using factory rounds.

I found a study that explored the use of copper bullets and compared them directly to traditional lead-bored bullets. It was interesting to note the observation that the copper bullets didn't shed their weight on impact, so a .270 130grain soft-point could be substituted with, say, a 110grain copper bullet for the same or similar terminal ballistics. Hence, lower recoil. I don't find the recoil of my .270 all that offensive, but it would be nice to maintain a better sight picture with a lighter mod'!

I used to use federal power shock (lead) ammo, I’ve since moved over to RWS 168gr lead free and haven’t looked back. Ok, it’s £47 a box compared to £23 for the federal but it works and on live quarry what’s a quid here or there in the scheme of things. Been very happy with them

Aye but these are only £36 a box... which as you say, is not going to price everyone out of the market.

P.s Macleods of tain have .308 RWS HIT for £29 a box on special offer...

Handy if local, but sadly the shipping costs would make that pointless for me in sunny east anglia....

Looking at the bullet design it has a good sized hollow point which should help it expand but no pressure relief grooves similar to the old Barnes X bullet. Whilst every rifle is different the X bullet was accurate in some and not in others. When Barnes modified the X bullet to the TSX and then TTSX by adding the grooves, the bullets started shooting more accurately in a greater proportion of rifles. Federal used to do a 150g load with the TSX bullet marketed as Vital shock that I believe worked well
