Casting lessons are never a wasted opportunity. Just like improving a golf swing or analyzing the path of a clay pigeon .It's far easier to correct something sooner, rather than later.
You will extend your learning curve greatly when it comes to casting, and generally fishing with someone who knows what they're doing.
Roll casting, double haul, even spey casting with a fly rod are worth their weight but there is no substitute for actual fishing lessons and learning about watercraft, entomology, leader make up etc
I'd encourage you to get a cheap vice and start tying some patterns yourself, YouTube has thousands of instructional videos. It will add another dimension of confidence into your angling.
