Forged Certificates

Heck… that’s worrying indeed .
It would seem the only safest option is Rfd to Rfd transfer only!

Making a forgery is a criminal offence - Fraud.

Obtaining a Firearm by deception is no different to obtaining a firearm through robbery or any other crime.

Holding a firearm without a valid license is a crime in itself.

Selling a shotgun to somebody who produces an in date shot gun certificate to which you enter the details and then record to whom you have sold it to and then notify the Police is pretty much any of us can do. Very few of us have been through in depth training to be able identify fraudulent documents.

Personally I would only transfer a shotgun or rifle to somebody whom I know, or is known to somebody whom I know. Or would do it via an RFD or auction.

On another forum, yes I know, it's on the internet so it must be true ;)

"Re this Q my mate (copper) dealt with this. Basically a guy with mental health issues bought a shotgun (from a shop iirc) with a fake sgc and used it to off his dad....
Ongoing stuff so no firm details etc but that was the gist."

Haven't heard anything directly but found this on the National Crime Agency website ...
This year, there has been an increasing amount of fraudulent copies of firearm documents being used in an attempt to unlawfully acquire legally held firearms. The National Crime Agency (NCA) need the help of firearms trade and certificate holders to prevent legal firearms being unknowingly transferred into unlawful possession and to protect the licensed firearms community from people who intend to defraud them.

This was on the news last evening.

Young chap who managed to forge a shotgun certificate, and purchased the shotgun from a private individual. Then used the gun to kill his younger brother and sister, and his mother. He also managed to secure 100 cartridges.
Filmed himself planning a mass murder in his local primary school. Thankfully and by good fortune, the police manged to find and stop him prior to any attack.

Its about time that this country brought back the death penalty for some of these people. Some may disagree, but it would make a few more cells in prisons empty, and cost the tax payer a lot less money to keep them in jail.

Do all RFDs have UV lamps to check the watermarks and other authentication marks on certificates?
I have never even seen one used. However almost all of the RFDs I’ve used are people who know me through introduction from mutual contacts within the shooting community. Asking for a second form of identification (passport or driver’s licence) and entering the details ‘live’ via the police force’s online system makes it significantly harder for someone to hold weapons illegally without it being the police’s error rather than the seller’s. This is what I have done for private sales.

If certain forces were a bit quicker processing applications/renewals/variations, perhaps there'd be less need for forgeries?
Did you forget the wink emoji?

Otherwise, what a stupid thing to say.
So you think genuine shooters would forge SGC/FACs because of the delay in processing? Where would that get them?

Either you are law-abiding, and then you put up with the delays, or a criminal. A criminal won't wait for any police check, would they give them all their details and a photo?

When people start forging coin of the realm or notes they change the design to spoil the forgers party. I’ve had tickets for over 30 years and the design doesn’t seem to have changed. There was talk some time ago about driving license style FAC cards but the police forces all seem to be stuck in the 1980’s technology wise.

Just had a note from a gun club I belong to advising a note from Local Police force regarding someone selling a shotgun to someone with a forged cert which then ended up getting used in a serious crime ! One to watch out for
If the politicians want to stick with a 100 year old paper based system what do they expect? The financial services industry got to grips with fraudulent transactions ages ago, high time that plod caught up and we moved online instead.
