I bought a F&D featherweight 196 about a year ago (not quite). It’s brilliant, lightweight, does a good job at sound attenuation, doesn’t hurt the shoulder when carrying and doesn’t unbalance the rifle. It wasn’t cheap though.
On their website they state that “the core” is titanium, a great selling point. Lightweight and robust. We all know how internals of mods suffer when other light but cheaper metals are used so this was what sold it to me.
so I am saddened to report that after probably 30-50 rounds use, and for stalking purposes only, no range time, the baffle stack shows signs of corrosion. It may well be superficial currently, but then I have literally fired a handful of rounds in less than a year so not impressed.
so, I emailed F&D directly and got a very prompt response telling me this was totally normal corrosion to be expected with aluminium...... urm, what? Sorry? The only material listed in the product description is titanium? I knew the outer case/body was aluminium but when I read that the “core” was titanium, I had rather assumed this meant the baffle assembly, the hard wearing bit which suffers the most with mods? Would that not make sense?
awaiting further response from them. But to me, this is rather disappointing.
In the pics attached, there is no corrosion in the internal of the baffles, but the outside now has a chunk missing from the muzzle end and various scars along its body. Possibly when they say the “core” they mean the inner portion of the bore?
