FYI For Poultry Keepers

I have received this text from APHA. Quite a bit of AI around at the moment with the migrating bird season.

APHA: Due to the risk of avian influenza, new housing measures to protect poultry and captive birds will come into force on 14 December in England, Scotland and Wales. It will be a legal requirement for all bird keepers to keep their birds indoors and to follow strict biosecurity measures. More at GOV.UK: Avian influenza (bird flu): Latest situation, GOV.SCOT: New housing measures to protect poultry and captive birds against avian flu - gov.scot and GOV.WALES: New housing measures to protect poultry and captive birds against avian flu | GOV.WALES

So no fresh free range turkeys in UK for Christmas?

That's going to be awkward.

Mine are coming along fine and to be honest no way would I lock them up for the next three weeks.

I keep some poultry and have spent almost a grand on upgrading the fencing, primarily to keep foxes out. I actually looked at providing some netting on the top to protect from buzzards but decided against it! Typical

That's a shame I have only one call duck left, an old drake lovely character and I don't feel inclined to shut him in after he has had the free run of the garden all his life nor would it be cost effective to do so.

I’m not inclined to tell anyone what to do with their poultry, just thought I’d share the info. Bear in mind that under netting is also ok, it doesn’t have to be under a shed roof.

if anyone is interested in getting the messages, if you register as a poultry keeper with APHA then you will get them.

A number of swans have tested positive for AI in South Wales recently. Being found dead floating down rivers and on the coastal parts.
