Garmin vs MagnetoSpeed parallel test

Garmin definitely smaller and easier to setup, has handy mobile phone connection without buying additional kit but a lot more expensive to start with.
Both are easy to use once you get the hang of it

One issue with Garmin for me is the sealed battery and as it happened today nearly run out on power. Since not many ranges have power points I would advise battery bank

So it’s a non issue with a power bank. I use one but have only had to use it when I forgot to charge after the last outing.

£100 difference between the two at rrp. Makes the Garmin far better value with the App features and ease of use. The biggest advantage for me is there is no point of impact change because you have nothing hanging off your barrel or have to use third party accessories to mount the magnetospeed off the barrel.

Think that was also raised battery end of life. Seems like an easy fix.

Personally, I am sticking to MagnetoSpeed for now. I just think they are more accurate in the way it measures the speed. And the fact that I owe one alrady😄 and don't fancy spending that much on another one. I will give it a few versions before considering or the price drops significantly 🤣
Garmin battery issue I mention before - even if you buy battery bank ( additional cost) I still don't like the fact that it us not user replaceable.

I do use Magneto with off barrel mount I made myself for about £30 ( there is a post here somehere )

I'll look for the post with the off barrel mount. I've seen a couple of YouTube clips for battery replacement. I spoke to the rep at the show or would be nice if they also added a temp monitor to the software so you can link it to the garmin Tempe for powder temps. The magneto speed is cracking especially if I can get it off the barrel.

I have made this specifically for my Tikka but it has a bit of an adjustment to fit other rifles when used with Tier One Evo bipod. I suppose it can be adapted more to fit other rifles. If you think this will fit your rifle I still have a couple lying arround.

#Mortis1975 I have fitted these to some hunting rifles with sloping forend using the front two screw adjustments.

Is there much variation from say one Garmin or one magnetospede to the next. So if I use D’s one day, and then a few months later use F’s are the results comparable. Or should you just stick with the one unit?

Doe atmospheric’s also change things - cold high pressure air is a lot denser than hot low pressure?

I think is best using the same unit if you can
I think the Garmin will be affected by atmospheric changes but not significantly to matter.

Would a Garmin be okay for club use were a lot of different people would have access to use it then hopefully return it to the clubhouse.
Is it just switch on and shoot any calibre past it?
Asking because our club is thinking of buying one for member use.
Thanks, Kb.

Yes. A number of members in our club have them. Basically plonk it down by the rifle and off you go. I am not sure how far apart shooters have to be and whether it picks up adjacent shooters. But I have not heard any mention of this.

Those using the Garmin have a foot or so to the right or left of the rifle being measured.
