Going back to lead, giving up on copper

I've read that Tikka are making their 243 in a 1 in 8 twist.
If you like the caliber?
Thanks - I love the calibre as I can use the same rifle for stalking and foxing in one outing. I did think about changing rifle, but it seemed like a hell of an expense just to be able to carry on doing what I've been doing perfectly satisfactorily for the past ten years!
I'm not at all anti-copper, and if I could have found a round that shot decently I would have, despite the big price difference between lead and copper ammunition. I suppose what I found dismaying is that I couldn't find any copper that shot well in what is a very common rifle and calibre, and like many others I was prompted to give copper a go by dire warnings that lead would soon be unobtainable - and it now seems like we have at least another five years to just carry on with lead.
I know it's different if your game dealer insists on copper, but my venison is just for family and friends.

It might be worth giving Vern a ring at Virtus Precision. He is producing factory ammunition in several calibres with his lathe turned bullets that are accurate and perform very well on game. I’m not entirely sure he produces 243 factory ammo as I can’t find it on his site but a call would answer the issue definitively.

While they use the same 80gr heads/bullets/projectiles (whatever you want to call it) <snip>

Deffo not a "head", bullet is a strong 'yes' and projectile is also a 'yes' but it needs to be moving to become a projectile.
A projectile is any object that once projected or dropped continues in motion by its own inertia and is influenced only by the downward force of gravity, ie a bullet after it has left the barrel.

It was the book/film that convinced me I needed to fish in Montana, and then hunt there, stunning part of the world
Yes, I spent a very happy summer there in 1987, on the Flathead Indian Reservation, helping two wildlife biologists live-trap beavers and muskrats, then monitor their movements on the Flathead River with radio antennae. Bit nerve-racking wandering around the Montana wilderness at night with a headset and antenna and trying not to bump into bears, but absolutely beautiful location.
Sorry, getting diverted from the main point of this thread!

Excellent read (and movie). It has been called one of the few truly well made films of Americana...
His other stories are, IMO, even better.
I also spent an enjoyable summer in Montana, in 1994, and was invited back to be an assistant to a canoeing outfitter on the Missouri in 1995. Had I gone I would maybe still be there, but I went to Alaska for the summer instead. It’s funny how small decisions can completely change the course of one’s life.
Anyhoo, that’s irrelevant for the OP. I learnt how to reload simply so that I could get a reliable copper bullet for my two rifles. I use Yew Tree and I’m happy with the results. Maybe worth considering?

Barnes 120 tttsx worked well this evening, double lung ran 40m, to the Op, don't give up on copper
Ha - thanks! I've really nothing against copper, and the deer I shot with it when trying different rounds all died! It's just that it seems I'll need to buy a new rifle in order to use it (I don't handload, and don't really have the inclination to get into it) – which seems a shame (besides the expense) as I'm perfectly happy with my current one, which shoots better than I can as long as it's lead!

Why don’t you look up Paul from bedssporting.com. He is based on Marston moretaine (near to MK /Bedford) and he custom loads all of my ammunition specifically for my rifles.
Ammo is always super accurate and he will find a load that delivers for your rifle.
You are not far from me so def worth a punt - he will make up small quantities or larger once you have a mix that works.

Thanks, that's a really useful tip, I'll give him a ring.
