Good old traditional awful British gunshop adventure.

I'd be both delighted and honoured to be tasked with undertaking an independent rating survey of all gun shops throughout this wee Isle and in the guise of a greenhorn to the sport.

Key of course to the outcome is that each Owner/Manager/Assistant will get but one (1) chance to impress with their preferred approach to customer care.

 So you have been and gone to Joe at cat hill then feller  did he tell you if you had came to him he would have talked you out of a 7.08 as the best rifles are his and why do you need that type of cal when xyz will do the same job better .

Is Joe's to be found in Essex?

My plan is to cover such emporiums as part the backend tour of Lowland Britain!

Been lucky in my experience, was introduced to Richard at Chris Potter Country Sports many years ago and was always looked after by him; have been equally well looked after by Duncan since Richard's departure.

I thought EB Guns had closed down; somebody mentioned it to me. I've always enjoyed Essex gun (Romford) for my guns and Park Street for ammo! Never had much of a problem with customer service at either but Essex just has a better stock!

Sounds like a Monty Python sketch, only the shopkeeper was more offensive than the cheese seller. I'd had told him to sling his hook and go to a good manners school where he could learn same. People like that are properly known as "sales prevention officers". He deserves to go out of business, and he will. You won't go back there, will you?

Gotta admit this is the thing that has me deliberating if I should have just got a .308 rather than a 7mm-08 - ammo seems a nuisance to get hold of! I reload (or try to anyway!), but even the brass is hard to come by unless I start necking up or down (= hassle!)... I probably won't even go to ruddy france now knowing my luck! :)... 4 months later and I'm still waiting for the poxy thing to be built as the barrels were so hard to get hold of!

Speak with dave Folwell. He is using Bergarra barrels (Spanish) and doesn't seem to have any problem obtaining them. 01914-920 077

I suspect it means if the rifle is already entered on your licence rather than having a slot for it, if they have to enter it I imagine there will be a nominal charge.

I think you can't have an FAC filled in your physical absence, you have to be there.

I don't see why. In law, possession doesn't mean you have physical custody (cf the case of Earl of caithness).

The RFD who hands the rifle to you will make an entry on your FAC recording the transfer. He may charge a fee for receivng the rifle and handing it to you. He records teh transfer in his register. You must within seven days inform the police who issued your FAC that you have acquired the rifle, and include this information:

- the date of the transfer
- the name and address of the RFD from whom you recieved the rifle
- the details of the rifle
type - bolt-action
make - Steyr (you said?)
calibre - the cartridge designation defines the calibre
serial number

You can do this by email to whatever address is the publicised address for such notifications. All constabularies (they are not a 'force' despite the common usage) must by law publish such an email address. You no longer have to send notice via Recorded Mail

Some might, but not Boss & Co: "I do not do 'admin' for guns coming in from other dealers unfortunately which are not purchased from ourselves."

Short sighted in my view. What he should do is say "here's your rifle sir, you'll be wanting some ammunition to go with it?"

I wonder at some of the comments as mentioned earlier I have dealt with and bought quite a few rifles from Joe and through Joe and he has always been most helpful. One of the first questions from Joe on arrival is normal "Coffee?" .......................... even though he knows that I don't drink the stuff to have a hot Choc instead.

It used to be "where is J-D" as they really loved the old dog and he loved visiting them too at the shop or at the shows.

Just reading through this thread, it's interesting how people interpret situations. Joe is my local RFD, and no, he doesn't suffer fools gladly, he speaks his mind, and will give an honest opinion, whether you like it or not, even if it costs him a sale. And boy does he love to wind people up for fun, especially the "know it all's".

Ask for his help/advice, and you'll be hard stretched to find better, start telling him his business, and you're more than likely get an ear full.

"Brand for brand", I've always found his pricing there, or there abouts, there may be the odd exception, but show me a shop where that isn't the case.

As for the "leaving the door open" incident, I think it's hilarious. By your own admission, you walked in from a snow storm, looking like a snowman, and then take offense when he cracks a joke/comments about shutting the door you left open

Personally, I'd have felt a bit of a plonker for not having closed the door, and not taken offence for being asked to do so. Some people clearly have thicker skins than others....................

I really am over this you know. If you like that shop, good for you, and for Joe! I've just taken my custom elsewhere, that's all.

Kind of reminds me of a shop U visited when on holiday last year, I won't say where but it was South of the border.

I walked in, it was quite along shop with lots of rails scattered about the floor with clothing hanging on them and shelving down either side displaying a selection of accessories and a few SMK air rifles with no other makes on show.

I had a wee look around but there was nothing terribly interesting and to be honest I'd left the friends and family we were with to have a 10 minute squint around the gun shop before rejoining them, and I was actively looking for a shotgun at the time so I walked up the counter where an older gentleman was standing staring straight ahead. He did look kind of strange but what happened next was really odd, I was the only other person in the shop and n arriving at the counter facing the bloke behind the counter I said hello and he turned to stare at the side wall of the shop so he was no longer looking at me, a little louder I said hello I am looking for a shotgun what do you have in? begrudingly he replied not much. I could see a rack of shotguns behind him! I said I can see you've 5 or 6 on that rack there, do you mind telling me what you have please?

So he told me what 3 of the guns he had were, one of which I was interesrted in so asked to see it. He grumpily said he would need my SGC to let me see it, by this time I was losing patience so sternly replied I only wanted to see it and this did not require my SGC which was safely stored away at our accomodation but that if I wanted to buy the gun I would return with it. Reluctantly he handed me the shotgun but tbh by this time I had already decided I wouldn't be buying there due to his horrendous attitude, I had a look quick look over of the gun and handed it back thanked him for his time and left.

By contrast my local RFD is cracking and will unlock his racks to let me have a look and handle of anything I am interested in, sometimes even stuff he knows I am not interested in but he has new stock in. He will cut a deal and price match what I have seen elsewhere even stuff advertised in magazines but down South.

Having a good relationship with your customers makes the world of difference IMHO, I stopped using another RFD who had always been pleasant when he was a cock to me one day in his shop. I have never returned and took my business elsewhere, last year alone must have cost the old RFD somewhere around £4k of my moolah.
