Wanted: Guide recommendations

Hi, I’m new to shooting and looking to gain experience. I don’t have a FAC yet and I’m booked onto the DSC 1 pre course and main course in March. Ive been looking at professional guides who could take me out. But it may help me choose if someone has experience and can recommend a good guide for a beginner. I’m based in Cheshire (near Manchester) but I can travel (not too many deer here). Any recommendations please?

I’m not a million miles away, but what are you looking for, some trigger time? If you get stuck I can take you out in north Wales with a variety of chamberings (calibres) but there are fantastic ranges set up specifically for this who may be a worthwhile investment.

You could probably do worse than booking onto the BASC bowland scheme Bowland

These are specifically aimed at DSC1 holders getting more experience. I haven’t been on this one but I have used other basc schemes (Southwick a few times, as well as Arran) and find them quite accessible and straightforward

Thanks for replying. Basically I’m after getting experience. Everything from trigger time to just watching and learning. Hopefully adding some practical skills to the theory. So if you can offer the chance for me to shadow you or to get some time with a rifle that would be great.

Definitely a route I’m going to take once I’ve done my DSC👍

@sikamalc is a fantastic guide. Went out a few times with him and his colleague and one trip took a fallow pricket within 2-3 minutes of stepping foot on one area, then made it to the highest and saw some Roe but they were left for another day and more fallow but sadly just too far into the treeline to easily shoot before they were scared by a dog. The other trip that time was highseat and saw a few but I wasn’t comfortable with the shot.

Mike Dickinson at Calton Moor range is worth a ring, he has red stalking at reasonable cost and can get you up and running so to speak. He’s out past Leek.

Nearly 20 years since I was out with him but he put me onto animals on my first trip and we glassed a lot more.

I used to live in Bramhall and you’re right there weren’t too many deer, there is lands with reds in Cheshire if you put the time in to get. took me 6 years of fox control before I got into it, then I moved overseas :)

I think there are a lot more roe about in north staffs and lancs if you put the time in, otherwise head up to Dumfries.
