Haix vs Meindl boot fit

Hi guys,

Anyone have experience with boots from the above brands In the same size?

I usually use the Haix high liability boots in a 9M and they’re just about wide enough, never got round to trying a 9W. Good ones seem to be becoming a bit thin on the ground these days so starting to look at other options.

I had so Meindl hiking boots a long way back and they were a 9 and it’s hard to remember now but I have a feeling that they were a bit on the tight side.

Whilst only being a 9 in length my feet are quite wide.

Any input appreciated.

Haix 9W is like a 91/2: the heel and ankle fit much the same as the 9 but there is more room in the rest of the foot. The boot comes with two insoles so you can ‘test and adjust’ to get the best fit.

I can’t get on with Meindl because they always seem too stiff for what I want. They’re a wider fit than Scarpa, a brand I’ve also used, but I guess that doesn’t help much if you haven’t used Scarpa yourself. Sorry.

I agree with the above, I recently bought a light pair of Scarpa for summer stalking and Tbh I think I’ll wear them all year round as there more flexi than the meindl and the Haix, they’re also GTX so should be fine for winter months, the only problem I may have is with the Scarpa being a narrower fit I won’t get thick socks on but I’ll try then come the winter and see how I get on.

Depends on the Meindl model. They have a standard European style last for some of their boots (eg Bhutan and Burma) , a wide fit last for some others (eg Dovre and Dovre Extreme) , and a wide comfort fit for others (eg Guffert). The Dovres I had were a bit on the tight side as I have very wide feet, and I needed a half-size up. The Guffert I wear now have a roomier toebox, which is perfect for my feet., and fit my standard shoe size. I wear a 10.5 G or H fitting in Barkers or Loakes, and a 45 Guffert is perfect. I needed a 46 in Dovres.

Bear in mind that there are many different models of boot by the above makers in different levels of stiffness.

And stiffness in the sole and / or the uppers.

Rough rule is that the steeper, rockier or more broken the ground is then you want a stiffer boot to provide support and ti be able to kick steps. Ditto for winter use.

If you are on flat land, hard trails etc a softer boot.

Goretex linings I think are crap. They just make your feet sweat and it takes an age for boots to dry.

Much better IMHO is to get good boots made with one piece of leather that is properly treated and then use good gaiters. These stop water from grass / heater etc soaking your legs and then running down into your boots thus giving wet feet.

I think the only way you can tell whether boots are any good for you is to try them on. If you can go to a shop where you can actually try them and get properly fitted.

If you are Mail ordering, be prepared to send them back if they are not correct for your feet.

Thanks for the input chaps.

typical I’m looking at surplus boots from the above brands as the can be picked up relatively cheap for what they are. Being they’re intended fore squaddies they’re usually pretty robust too!

I spend all day every day, sort of 300 plus days a year!

No experience of Meindl, but I have two identical pairs of Haix. The medium fitting is tight, and if I was buying again I'd definitely go for the wider option in my usual size.

I use haix black eagle 2.0 tactical, I've had the high liability boots but found them too stiff and heavy, the black eagle one are like wearing trainers and are completely water proof I've had mine 3 yrs and are true to size

I had looked a my them Dawnbreaker. But I spend a lot of time scrabbling around on my hands and knees for various reasons and I fear without the big old rand, or whatever the bit over the toes is called they won’t last 5 minutes!

Something a bit more flexible would be nice though.

Yeah I get that mate, are you looking for something high legged or just mid, if mid checkout altberg yan tans excellent boots, big toe rand the whole way round or maybe lowa combat gtx bombproof boots and comfy too

I’ll check them out, how does the Alt Berg fit come up?

Usually I prefer something like the hight of the Haix, always found I prefer more support. Probably owing to dislocating both ankles in a motorcycle incident when I was younger!

Fit is spot on im a 10 and fit was perfect , yeah I prefer a higher ankle too, I'm gonna go with the lowa combat gtx next boots I get, I had a pair for a short while and really liked them very robust and comfortable not overly heavy

Just bought some Haix ECW boots from an AS store on FleaBay I went with M on my size and can’t fault them and at a 1/3 of the price if not more than “ stalking boot brands “ it’s a no brainer.

Last longer than the sole

I would have agreed with you a few month back but I recently went back to a pair of Meindl and more recently again bought a pair of Scarpa Rush Gtx and they are really comfortable, I have worn the Haix for the last couple of seasons and loved them but my feet must have just needed a change. I‘ll keep the Haix and probably wear them for the coming beating season.
