I suppose it is only to be expected, seeing as we are financially and at times I think morally bankrupt as a country.

We are buggered as a country, with so much debt that it cannot conceivable ever be paid back, even the interest on the debt isn't being paid back. But we are not the only ones in the $hite.
It does read as we're in a dreadful state - and we are. But in Nelsons time the ships crew consisted of a fair percentage of foreign sailors, plus a very large percentage of pressed men. Very few were volunteers. There was a shortage of ships too and captured enemy vessels were used to bolster our fleet. Apart from press gangs roaming our pubs not a lot has changed
