How many lives do you have left ?

Wow! perhaps that was one of your nine lives used up Lateral. Hope the telling of it on here was therapeutic. It does have another effect though, in that all of us that read it will be just that little bit more cautious, so who knows, you may be preventing another incident.

When you find out whose dog it was you helped, I think he should replace your hat. (Would've said iphone, but they are pretty pricey and I hope covered by insurance).

All the best.

Glad you're ok mate that must have been horrendous. You'll have a strangely different outlook on life from now on, trust on me that, which you won't be able to explain.

Just over 7 years ago I was diagnosed with a brain tumour that put me in a wheelchair and was told I would be blind within 6 and brown bread within 12 months if they couldn't get it out ok. Obviously and luckily they did and I recovered fully, but it makes you think differently about things and I think you'll find yourself more laid back and smiling more from now on!!

I think I used a few of my 9 up that year so not sure how many I have left!! :D

Take care matey,

Stratts

Glad to hear it ended up ok. A few years ago I was crossing a small river that runs into tha skagit, which is a big powerful river. About halfway across I realised that the current was too strong and if I came off my feet I would be pushed out into mid flow of the main river. I couldnt turn round as the increased area to the flow would knock me over and I couldnt walk backwards so just stood there feeling terrified. After what seems like forever another angler came along and got a thick branch that he could pull me across with. Was still a little hairy but lived to tell the tale. Got to respect the power of water.

Shocking. It's amazing how many different thoughts you can have in such a short period if time. Glad your ok bud.

I watched something on the TV a couple of years back about folk getting caught in dangerous situations like flooding and storms etc. there was a clip shown of a guy who fell into one of those massive open drains you see in America that take away flash flood water, the type the car race was filmed within in the movie Greese! Sorry, but best description I can think of....

This grown man had somehow got into the water which was no deeper than the middle of his thighs, but he was facing a bridge support and pinned against it with the water pushing against the backs of his legs. Some clever bloke had worked out that with the depth and speed of the water, trying to push himself off the bridge support against the flow of the current was the equivalent of bench pressing over 400lbs. They eventually got a rope round him. The force of running water is incredible having been caught a few times when wading and fishing.

with you being wholly submerged against a flow and the drag of all your clothing and kit, it may well have been an impossible task for even your rescuers to pull you back against the current.

Well I’m glad you made it through! Very very frightening stuff... With work I've done swift water rescue and ice rescue courses, both involved being the causality and the rescuer. Being at the mercy of the elements with a safety line on in a semi controlled environment is frightening enough! So I can go some way to understanding the situation you were in. I carry a couple of throw lines and some karabiners in a bag in the back of my vehicle just incase but I just know that it will never be in the right place at the right time. You’re a lucky lad.

All the best

In answer to the question posed.

I guess we only get one life and I'm pretty sure we won't know when it has run out... we might suspect something's up just before then though...:D

But... you're still here. Or you couldn't read this.

ps. I might not be... who knows when the one with your name on it will happen along?

Whilst not ideal, I always felt that I had an alternative to being pulled out, and some control, with the option of being able to let go.

Now, the more I read the comments from people who have experienced fast running flood water, the more lucky I think I am, because the thought of being out of air, and desperately trying to release myself, whilst my friends were trying to pull me back, thinking they were helping, is the most disturbing thought yet !

That aside, I'm just looking forward to when my ribs stopping hurting, so I can sleep in bed, rather than having to sleep in a chair

I've been shot, stabbed, burned, blown up and run over by a car... and once, on a hunt, I was pulled from the ice I'd fallen through by my quick thinking brother in law. None of the former was as scary than the latter.~Muir

Luck is on your side.....

Treat yourself to the shotgun you have always wanted, the fact you didn't panic went a long way to your survival.

Glad you are OK. On Christmas Eve we learnt that the father of one of my sons school friends drowned in the river in Ambleside, apparently trying to rescue his dog that had come into difficulty. He was a well respected school teacher, shooting man and more importantly husband and father. As so often the case the dog got out. His funeral is later today. Never forget how lucky you were to get out as you did.
