Just to throw an alternative suggestion out there, how about making it a requirement that anyone who wants to advertise any item valued at over, let's say, £50, or maybe £100, has to have the recommendation of a long-standing member (eg, someone with over 5,000 posts)?
I get where you are coming from and agree but technically tricky or time consuming.

I fell into the site, joined when looking for a scope and rifle , have grown to love it !

Have a rant in a world that has gone wrong.
Get pulled up when you have gone be too far.
Research kit and technical issues.
Learn all sorts you never knew you needed to learn.
A bit like the best pub chat ever.
The only social media I do.

That's all good but what about those of us who don't comment much cause we rarely have anything of value to add! That said £24 a year for the amount of information I learn from here is nothing! I really ought to just become a supporter
And yet you havent …….

You need to make the Supporter label a lot more noticeable. A bit like on you tube you keep getting asked to like or subscribe, or go and become a Patreon.

I have often wondered what makes you a supporter, but nothing to switch my little brain towards how to become one.

99% of the time I use the safari app on my iPhone.

Where exactly does the money that supporters pay, trade members pay and businesses advertising go?
A chunk of it goes on sponsored DSC1 courses to help newcomers and youngsters get into stalking.
Do a quick search on here for "sponsored DSC1" and you'll find lots of writeups be folk who've been fortunate enough to benefit from it

Sorry, but that doesn't give much clarity for anyone parting with their money. There should be absolute transparency from anyone asking others for money to support. It's perfectly reasonable governance to have a breakdown of how income is spent. Cheers.

FFS £24.00 a year is hardly the end of the world for the information available on these pages. Plenty of transparency as to the destination of the cash. I’d imagine it costs the site owners a fair bit to give us the opportunity to use its resources. I was lucky enough to be offered a DSC1 placement. Sadly it was cancelled due to covid but that’s as maybe.

If it was a membership fee I'd be inclined to agree with you.
But it's not.
It's just a voluntary contribution.
A fairly small one at that.
You're overthinking it.

I don't think I am. It's a perfectly reasonable thought process to me. That's why forums are forums... variances in thinking and constructive debate. If I pay money, I want to know exactly where it goes.

It's a donation rather than a payment.
At least, that's the way I see it.
And there's no secret about the money being used to sponsor DSC1 courses.

Well the it helps the site owners with the cost of running the website - domains, server rental, their time etc etc. You also get entry into a monthly draw , circa £3-400 worth pf prizes every moth and currently only north of 600 subscribers so the odds are pretty good.
Hopefully admin will be along shortly with a more detailed expanation.
