Kitchen knives

Looking for a new set of knives.

I have a budget of no more than a 100. Can anyone recommend a decent set please.

Cheers

I buy the classic Sabatier black handle with 3 silver rivets. The quality can vary slightly but I pick them up one by one hence only buying exactly what I want.
1) large chefs knife
2) medium Japanese style veg chopper
3) small/medium general
4) small serrated

the good thing is this style is so timeless you can replace and add as you go along. Perhaps a little more than £100 required, maybe £150.
Enjoy your shopping.

Absolutely all of the above. Don't ignore kitchen devils knives as well. All relatively cheap as chips and with a good diamond sharpening stone and smooth steel you can't go wrong. Imo.

Thanks chaps! I'm looking for a block too, because I hate just throwing my knives in the draw or the utensils pot!

Nisbets do a great range at all price ranges. See if you can look at their on line knife guide and see if you can buy online.

I have all sorts, Sabatier, Dick and Victorinox. All the Victorinox are excellent, have plastic handles and are dishwaher safe. They are very sharp and keep good edges.

Saying that I have a Sabtier set in a block which was a wedding present 26 years ago. Solid handles still going strong.

Thanks, you know you'd get less for murder though and be out now...

I love Nisbets. So much stuff you never knew you needed...:D

I was given this as a gift 20 odd years ago, I still use it today and its every bit as good.

I have other knives but this set is only used to process and butcher game, kitchens are hard on knives when non knife people are given access to them. ;)

A nice set of knives, shame they won't be coming from over the pond if I was to order them for a while.

I have full set of original wooden handled Victrinox that I got for my chefs apprenticeship when started in 1975, along with a 4 set Gustav Emil Ern knives again with wooden handles, over the years I have accumulated a vast number of various high brand knives from various corners of the globe, varying styles/handles from bone to ceramic, but when butchering deer etc, I always reach for the old trustworthy Victrinox...(same company that make Swiss Army Knives)

Both the Victrinox and Gustav sets are still going strong today and are as sharp (if not sharper) than they were in 1975, and they have been well used for the last 45 years, buy cheap buy twice.

I can't stand knife blocks out on the counter top:

As for knives; there's a mixture of Sabatier, Sabatier "V", Rosenthal (the cleaver & a small santoku), Berkley, Kitchen Devil, Sambonet, with all bar the latter being individual purchases.
I've yet to find a use for the large Sambonet santoku.

Fibrox-handled Victorinox. Not 'posh' but excellent quality chef's / butcher's knives.

This. Not flash but work well. Not the best steel by any means but certainly amongst the best for the money and you will get 3-4 knives and find a block you actually like for less than 100quid.

Easy to sharpen. Proper work horses. I spent my youth in a pub kitching cutting spuds and carrots and doing garnishes with these blades. It is still what I have at home even though I could get something nicer. Just no point.
