KNZ mineral block

Hello

Could anyone tell me where I can purchase KNZ blocks, I've been using them for around 14 years and my current supplier has gone silent not replying to any email that I send, I normally purchase a pallet which is 56 blocks which lasts the year,
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

What is the advantage of these over ones available from ag merchants or Himalayan rock salt blocks?

David Stretton used to sell them.

Haven't looked at KNZ data sheets (and don't know which one we're talking about) but proper mineral blocks include stuff that helps both sexes year around. So not only for antler growth, but does during pregnancy etc.

Flip side is, animals are drawn more to the pure salt ones. There has been studies, at least in US, what is the minimum salt content that animals still visit the block (or maybe pit) regularly. IIRC it required about 50% salt. In commercial European licks there are only few percent other stuff (the minerals).

Word of caution, all animals are not "compatible" with all blocks. I'm sure there are more knowledgeable members, but maybe sheep shouldn't have access to certain game animal blocks?

I used to supply them to David; post Brexit they became vastly more expensive to import ( from Amersfoort in the. Netherlands, where they were made, to the U.K. but via Eire for some unknown reason!) A very interesting story of improved deer health lies behind how he became agent in midlands for these.

Several- rock salt blocks aren’t made to the same standards as KNZ’s vacuum salt blocks, which had very precise amounts of specific compounds of trace elements in a form which was readily digestible and did not clash with or cancel the properties of one or another. Rocksalt mineral blocks typically held ‘estimates’ of this or that trace element, mostly too little and more often than not at the incorrect/inconsequential levels; KNZ Vilt blocks were designed from the ground up with trace element content to maximise conversion of natural forage for overall health.

Professor Bo Lagergren at Akzo Nobel ( parent company) developed these blocks, I had the pleasure of meeting with him a d discussing several aspects of the chemistry of the blocks and the biological requirements of deer, and securing a contract to distribute his excellent product some twenty years ago. Fun fact - his hunting pal took what was for many years the World record roebuck trophy on the ‘informal trial ground’ during his development phase leading to the eventual recipe they were produced to.
A leading rock salt blocks typically held manufacturer approached Prof Lagergren to try to address various physical and chemical shortcomings of their product, but as we say, ‘you can’t make honey from hen poo’ …

Our Monarch’s stalker still uses these blocks on Bachnagairn, His private beat of Balmoral - you
may assume they have been thoroughly ‘vetted’.

I won’t bore you with more details, but they were consistently awarded ‘best block’ in extensive tests made by leading German hunting Journals (plural) which looked at the entire range of blocks available across Europe.

Tests at Trolle Ljungby, Christianstadt, Skåne, on a fenced fallow herd where 200 yearlings were culled annually demonstrated a 2 tonne increase in carcass weight totals over a two year period: carcass weights went from 25kg to 30kg in the first year of use, as the first crop of calves used the blocks as they grew, meantime the does using the blocks from startup conceived and produced their next calves, which when culled as yearlings averaged 35kg. 10kg of gain in yearling body weights over 2 years of using the product. It is well understood that if the calf is born with a greater body weight, it has the potential within it to develop into a good animal over time; equally, should a calf have a lower birth weight, its chances of maximal development over its lifetime are disadvantaged from the start. It took but two generations for calves taken from Balmoral to live and breed in Windsor to double in body weight as adult animals. This conveys something about environmental factors vs basic genetics, but to have both of course helps greatly.

Head deer manager at the time (over twenty year ago now) was Lars Lijlenberg, whom I also had the pleasure of meeting there.

There is growing evidence that using the various licks and blocks may be a significant factor in disease transmission. Just something to bear in mind.

This also applies in the case of almost every intensively reared/managed ruminant (including sheep, cattle, etc) and/or where densities are very high, leading almost inevitably to rapid transmission of any disease outbreak, for context.

Fascinating, thank you for sharing.

Impressive ‘devaluation of Sterling over time’ - used to deliver them at £8 each, istr that in Sweden they were available at around £5.50 equivalent!
