Long range 22LR

I've got to 292 metres on a 12" frying pan but only a couple of hits out of about forty walking round the target like a blind man. Need to find a big sandy bank and get some good data. Hits every time at 200m. Forget how well I've done on my 245m target and my records are embarrassingly scant or absent. Suspect 50% or so.

CZ 452, DIP 20 (I think) MOA rail, Burris signature Z rings with the inserts and the mounts are only a couple of rail slots apart from each other (both on the back half of the scope tube) so quite a lot more nod there. The 50m zero is something like 2 clicks off the bottom of the scope so I have just about the full range of dialing. Vortex 2.5-10x32 with a 30mm tube.

Using RWS hollowpoint subs and not bothering to wipe the wax off them. Going to change brands when I finish this brick. The wax is excessive and I don't think I need a hollow point. Will stay subsonic because I like peace and quiet.

Will post photos of the rifle in due course. It looks bizarre but it works.

Told you it looks funny. Bipods are for sissies btw. Men wrap up. That's partially why the scope is like that actually. I need it forward when slung up.

I recently tried the Eley Long Rage Ultra, in three different rifles - absolute garbage! Not sure how it was tested but it was grouping at about 2 1/2” at 100 yards…with 2 bolt actions and a semi-auto…

Maybe just a coincidence that all three grouped badly but not something I will be planning to buy again. My rifles shoot Eley match very well so will stick with that.

May I kindly enquire. I would like to start using a .22 for long range plinking. Which rifle would you recommend?

The current "wisdom" is subsonics perform better....
True. Once you are supersonic (rather than trans-sonic) drag decreases with velocity. But when you are subsonic, drag increases as velocity squared. It turns out that about 900 ft/sec is best. Look around for some good pistol ammo.

Plus you remove the bullet instability/turbulence of the transition from supersonic, to subsonic.

@bowji john how are you finding the R100 at 100 and beyond?
I tried it before and I couldn’t get on with it, but I finally round some R50 again for my Vudoo and it’s a no brainer, just need to find time to stretch its legs again
Significantly better than the SK LRM at 100.

10 shots at 100y on Saturday
(only had time to shoot 10 at 100, shot the other 40 through the same hole at 50)

I think the split group was down to not having my glasses on 🤣

It has been a while since I’ve shot the Vudoo beyond 150m

Though I have used R50 it has been a while so can’t remember how it performs

I’ve stuck with R100 which has, in the past, been reliable out to 300m

At 150m I’ve found special match to work well

All pistol ammo I've tried in the past (and it was basically everything that was available) was on par or faster than SV rifle ammo. Shot from rifle, of course.

And from the drag point of view, your statement makes no sense. If ammo A is 900fps from muzzle and ammo B is 1000fps, then ammo B gets a headstart (since it will be 900fps too, after certain distance).

Transsonic zone is far larger than most people understand. Quite conservative approach is to use 20% i.e. define it as 0.8 Mach to 1.2 Mach. Incidentally, this is about 900fps on the lower end. More opportunistic approach is to use 10% i.e. 0.9 Mach to 1.1 Mach. On larger bores, like 45cal, you can really hear a difference in flight noise between 0.8 Mach and 0.9 Mach.

IME 22LR is quite forgiving in transsonic zone. Basically all match ammo is very near 1.0 Mach, and they don't have stability issues.
