Long range target rifle

@Ronin It was from reading what you posted about it that I thought it would make a good long range rifle and I was planning on getting one. It was only after I started this thread that I found out that the chamberings that use a .470" bolt face would struggle out to a mile and that's made me reassess what to get. If I were to shoot to 1200 yards rather than a mile it would do everything I think

A Remington 700 L/A with a .540 bolt face would tick many of your boxes.

As would a Tikka, Howa, Sako TrGs etc etc

From my research it seemed the Rem 700 L/A's internal magazine would accept some of the longest COAL's for a factory action, plus the ability to extend it to a ridiculous 4.1" with a Wyatt's Box (don't think I'll be doing that though!)

Then again, the OP probably doesn't need a repeater for targets!

bergara, howa remington chambered on 300 win mag or 338 lapmag.

money no object something like my unique alpine tpg 1 in 300 win mag.

now that is an absolute unit of a rifle, the muzzle break scares people off though haha

Just be aware, you wouldn't be able to use .338 at Bisley (and may apply to other ranges too) Also may be restrictions or special arrangements for using muzzle brake too.

Thanks for pointing that out. I was planning on either 300PRC or maybe a 7mm so should be ok

I'm sure someone will be along to correct me.

I think that certain bullet weights in the likes of 300 win mag and the prc will take you over the hme limit just stated for bisley?
Or atleast there's a zero procedure you must undertake

Yes, you are right. Thanks for pointing this out @1066 @C h r i s and @Stalker-of-the-deer

Having just read the rules about muzzle energy at Bisley it looks like nothing above 3280 fps or 3319 ft lb is allowed on the rifle ranges, so not on Stickledown or Century, and only on Chobham Ridge with special permission in advance. So that rules out the 7mm and .30 magnums for Bisley.

Angus - HME is allowed at Bisley, you just need to complete a zeroing procedure before you shoot it.

Lot's of people have been shooting HME at this week with match rifle so it's perfectly possible and I have HME stuff I shoot there.

There is chapter and verse, but if you want the simple language version, please drop me a PM.

Best wishes,

Scrummy

Yes, HME allowed - But, see section 9..... No .338.

Additional Limits on High Muzzle Energy (HME) Firearms

8. A High Muzzle Energy (HME) Firearm is defined as any firearm which, using a particular round, develops a muzzle energy (ME) in excess of 4500 J (3319 ft lb). The HME zeroing procedure must be carried out before they may be fired on any range at Bisley. The firearm may be zeroed:

a. on the Zero Range using a special target supplied by the Range Office.

b. under control of an RCO (HME) at the start of the practice for shooting at 200 yards or less .

c. at a distance of 200 yards on a special target under the direction of an RCO (HME) (see paragraph 39 below) prior to shooting at greater distances.

9. Rifles chambered for .338” may not be fired on the Bisley Ranges

Over the moon with my Bergara (especially for the money) Got mine in .308 as was only looking to get out towards 1000yards and conscious of round costs as you move up calibre. And ultimately more for fun than any form of serious completion. No issues with the importer in UK and first class service from the folks out in Spain (bought a few aftermarket bits!) Both an “international” and essentially a US FaceBook page for Bergara shooters with bags and bags of evidence of various calibres shooting successfully at a mile and excellent results straight out of the box. At 2k I had a brand new rifle, bipod, rail, decent scope and MOD all ticked off - standard 5 round mag and then sourced a 10 round direct from Spain. Action is a REM 700 so very easy to swap things about if you so wish.

Certainly worth a serious look if the budget is an important element! Of course, the thing that really twisted my arm was the availability in “cack-handed” 😂😂😂

Have fun whatever you get!

Ps….. I’ve recently been introduced to my teenage (almost 18) daughters new boyfriend….. I’ve been telling him all about my latest rifle addition….. 👀😇

To be clear, you meant "Rem 700 footprint/inlet", correct?

Action based on the Rem 700, same footprint. Takes Rem 700 picatinny rails etc.
I would hesitate to say it is based on a 700 action, save that it is a two lug, 90* bolt throw receiver that has the same footprint as a 700 and is drilled and tapped to take 700 bases with 6-48 screws. But I'm probably splitting hairs...

I was wondering if you are going to be predominantly using Bisley as a range for your new rifle build, or if it would be exception to the rule?
If yes, you may have more pleasure for running a 300wsm than something more potent.
If you are going to run at most other ranges without restrictions, build as you please. 🍻👍
