Lowa Tibet vs Hanwag Alaska

I am about to retire my 20 year old Scarpa Manta's and treat myself to a new pair of mountain boots. I like a stiff sole rigid boot that is crampon compatible. I don't want a highleg insulated boot. Scarpa's are not what they used to be, so looking elsewhere. Meindels don't fit me - too wide - I have narrow feet.

Both the Lowa and Hanwag make good boots, and it will come down to the best fit as always. But any views on Lowa vs Hanwag as to longevity etc?

I will be ordering them online, but want to avoid the faff of having to send back etc. Nowhere in Edinburgh seems to do good Mountain boots these days.

Hanwag grunten are what I use for daily use, stalking, mountaineering, travel, etc - it is, the perfect boot.

But! Order two sized smaller than you think and be prepared that they are very roomy!

Pat - if you have narrow feet, consider mammut

The Tibet's are pretty true to size - I take a 7 in all shoes and 7 in Tibets give me some room for thick socks if needed.

I took a pair out of stock this year to wear around town on this year's skiing trip and now where them as my go-to weekend footwear - like wearing slippers!

We have no problems with returns for size up or downs on any Lowa boots :thumb:

Thanks

Rob

Got both Tibet’s and hunter Gtx and got both from rob exceptional service as always.
Interesting to note that the lowa’s Are made and owned by one brother and the Hanwags by the other brother. Apparently they had a tear up a few years ago when they worked together so they split and the latter set up Han wag!!!!!

I have a pair of hanwag tatra top gtx. They are fantastic and worn every day. Cannot comment on lowa though.

Hanwag Tatra GTX worn for 4 years hill stalking and still look like new. If you're looking for a Hanwag retailer, Game and Country in Selkirk is where I got mine. They may be able to help and they're not a million miles away from you.....
PS They also used to discount if you're an SGA member

I’ve used Lowa boots for a few years now and started with the Hunter GTX which were excellent, but for me too high and tiring for extended walking, so I tried the Tibet’s and they my number one choice for all hunting and walking now, giving excellent ankle support and are amazingly comfortable. They are super quality, will last a long time and have a neat lace lock system for the different areas of the boot.
Make sure you buy a half size bigger than you take, it cost me to find out.

Stiff boots wise i haven't had the makes mentioned but have you tried Glockners?

The Meindl Dovre are too wide for me but the Glockner fit well and are a tough boot with a stiff sole (not as stiff as the Mantas)

I’d go lowa, I’ve had both and while both were extremely comfortable the Hanwags have always leaked...

I'll give you a call then!

Thanks Gentlemen for all your views. Had a chat with Rob and Monarch Country Sport and currently wearing a pair of Lowa Tibet's whilst at my desk today - they arrived yesterday. First impressions are very good - they fit well. They are good hard boots for mountain use and will inevitably take a while to fit like an old pair of slippers, but the basis is there. Nice stiff sole that allows you to cut step either go up and down or traversing - whether it be into snow and ice, or more usually soft peaty ground. I like the locking system so that lock the bottom part tight, but keep the tops looser for moving on the flat.

Why the Lowa Tibet - prefer an ankle or just above ankle rather than a mid length boot. And didn't want the insulation of the Hunter. Hanwag Alaska harder to get in the UK and £50 or so more expensive for what looks to be pretty much the same boot. And Rob could source a pair of size 9's for me at a good SD price - I believe these are the last ones in this size available before the Autumn.

Now just need to get out and walk them in ahead of a trip planned early Autumn.
