Macmillan stocks

I quite fancy one of these for my sako 75 in .270 but I’ve a few questions for those that are more experienced on here.

Are all orders done directly from the states?

How much fitting do the stocks take? Is it worth having it pillar bedded and are they best fitted by a gunsmith?

My only other concern is that I can’t ‘try before you buy’. I assume the shape will be pretty similar?

I take it it’s an IV action I need and a Sporter barrel profile? Or would the .270 count as a magnum profile?

Thanks guys!

Oh and last quiestion..are they worth the monies? They look great but it’s almost getting into new gun territory

They are fabulous stocks. They are very stiff and - most importantly, as hunting is really only a fashion parade for boys - they look awesome!

Look on Jackson Rifles' website to see what they already have in stock in the UK.

They are usually a drop-in with no work required. I always get them pillar bedded too but I'm not sure it's actually necessary. Shoot it first and see whether it needs it.

Kind regards,

Carl

I would advise actually handling one, preferably in the model you want to buy. Pretty sure most folk would agree fit is most important, cheek weld/comb height very much has to be right. I've often found any McMillan I've picked up is a bit small in the grip for me, as I've reasonably large hands, which I found odd as I thought they'd be designed based on average American hands.
You could also try calling Callum at PRS for his advice, as he keeps stock and uses them in his builds.

I have McMillans on most of my rifle. I ordered a Sako 75 stock in IV for my 6.5x55 sporter barrel. I asked for a bit of extra barrel clearance which I got. I like them alot. I have 2 x Sako 75 1x Rem 700 mountain
rifle and a Sako Game Warden. Jackson rifle probably have some in stock. Best to try before you buy. All of mine are bedded apart from the Rem 700 mountain. The Camo stock was cool 15 years ago but still does it's job.20181104_085150.webp

They're very good which is just as well because they can take a long time from ordering.
Quality is generally very good but just occasionally they can have more blemishes than you would expect. If you've waited 10months its a real pain if its wrong.
No ordering from the US now. Pity I found them very good to deal with, much cheaper and ordering from stock (pun) very quick.
Resale is generaly good in popular patterns/actions.
The below stock is a Macmillan mountain rifle I've used nearly daily since 2006.

I have 4 rifles with McM stocks, I have never been disappointed by them. They seem strong and hard wearing but they are not the lightest. Other alternatives that I have experience of include PSE composites and Manners that are both excellent if they are available in the inlet you desire

After handling both. I preferred the PSE stock. My mates McMillan is very narrow in the grip and I’ve got small hands.
PSE felt a lot nicer. Slightly higher comb for higher mounted scopes.
Oh and waaaaaaaaay lighter.

I wasn't keen on mine, I thought it was heavy, slippy when damp or wet, a couple of bits fell off and had to be sent back twice and when the adjustable cheek piece was raised to the correct level it stopped the bolt from opening!!
I much prefer my PSE one, far better imo, I'd not have another McMillan but I'd buy another PSE today if I needed one.

Over the years I have used a lot of different stocks. It's telling that the gun cupboard currently contains three McMillan stocks, 2 of which are thumb-holes. If you look closely at my Avatar image, you will see a Sako 75 in a thumb-hole stock too.

I'm not a fan to be honest.
Ordered an A5 via my gunsmith for a custom build, direct from Mcmillan. Took about 8 weeks to deliver (not a problem) but when it was delivered the quality was very rough, with very noticeable mould marks and a poor finish. McMillan took no responsibility and refused to refund saying the quality was acceptable !
The gunsmith was left holding the baby and much credit to him, he had it custom dipped at Hydrographics at his cost. The finish was excellent afterwards but overall it left a nasty taste.
I've got to say that overall I found the A5 to be a big, awkward, heavy lump (but nice and stiff though) and changed it not long afterwards....there are too many good other choices around for me to go that route again.
Regards, Rob.

Really happy with my A5.

I went to see McMillan when I was in Phoenix and I was Impressed with the amount of hand finishing that went on to be honest. From memory there was nearly 8 steps between coming out of the mould and being dispatched. To get one with marks and blemishes I would say would be almost impossible unless it had been banging around in someone’s cupboard for a while. They are all dispatched in mint, and I mean mint condition.

I’ve got one of the carbon edge stocks and it’s very stiff, and I find the palm swell and grip just about perfect.

The PSE stocks are extremely well made and beautifully finished, and I can HIGHLY recommend having a look at Raven Arms stocks... they make some beautiful carbon fibre stocks.

Cheers guys! Certainly plenty mixed reviews which is very helpful. I’ll have a look at PSE as I hadn’t heard of them. At quick glance they don’t seem to have as many colour options as McMillan and I really do like the mcmillan marble finish but with the amount of money we’re talking about for a ‘novelty’ it has to be right. Weight is a consideration I hadn’t thought about and my stalking setup is already heavy,(at least there’s less recoil!).

Any more replies are greatly appreciated - surprised so many people had to be honest and it’s very appreciated.
