Mini mauser, Roe legal caliber re-barrel

I have recently bought a Zastava M85 in .222 for muntjac. The rifle is very accurate but has a slightly pitted chamber, so I will re-barrel at some point in the next few years. I have more and more roe cropping up and am and will be pressured to cull them. Even though I don't think they really need it yet here in the Southern Welsh borders!

My question is when I re barrel in a few years or so I would like it to be at 1700 ftlbs and 6mm or above. I would like to keep the barrel to 22".

What can I get roe legal in a 22" barrel, with that bolt face area (happy to have let out)?? I have looked at 6mm ppc, 6mmx47, 7.62x39

Is this doable and thoughts or ideas - or should I just re-barrel again in .222 - helpful comments welcomed!

Think of other opportunities' which may come along, keep that and buy a second rifle as the re-barrel cost against a low miles rifle could be on par.

6mmBR will do the business, bolt face will need opening up but with a suitable soft point (or other type) hunting bullet the COAL will be similar. That said, magazine length & feed might be an issue for the BR so maybe look for something that’s basically a necked up (to 6mm) .223/.222Rem case.

Hi - I not sure if the bolt and extra will take that size head? I did look at it. Either way I would like to chamber a smaller case size.

It’d certainly make life simpler if you go for something that’s the same head diameter & has a COAL that’ll fit in the magazine & feed - perhaps a 300 Blackout :norty:

With the mini mauser you don’t want to mess about changing bolt face. You want to keep to the small 222 / 223 type bolt face.

The 6.5 Grendel is a lovely little round, but it uses a bigger bolt face as its parent case is the ppc, 7.62x39 type cartridge.

I would be taking a close look at one of the 6mm cartridges which use the 223, 223 Magnum (204 Ruger) cartridges, given that the OP is down in Englandshire rather than in Gods own country where we can use the 222 on Roe.

Hi, yes I agree, I am looking for real world experience with a 22" barrel if anyone has it?

@karamoja: look at the posts in this thread from 'erich'. He has worked up the .257/204 to do exactly what you would like to do within the constraints of your action and stated barrel length.
