Looking for opinions on muzzle forward moderators vs over barrel.

Considering a SL5i or push the boat out and go F&D. I see F&D have new muzzle forward options that would add 3cm to barrel length.

I have a "muzzle forward" mod on my .243. It adds about 8" to the length of the rifle I should think, making the overall setup pretty long. Have often thought of changing it for an over barrel option, and have an empty slot on my FAC to enable me to do so, but having tried out quite a few (courtesy of my friendly RFD) I thought they just made the rifle feel like a clumsy lump. So I'll stick with my muzzle forward option, which may be long but at least it's graceful!

Incidentally, I also have an end of muzzle Parker-Hale mod on my .22lr. I notice that these are very popular and often recommended. What I have on my .243 is just a scaled up version of that, really.

Lost track of the amount of times my rifles get a back or knock going in or out of the door, tractor, truck etc, much reduced now due to over barrel mods.

Aesthetically, over-barrel wins every time IMHO.

I've seen some beautiful rifles that have a damn great can hanging off the barrel and it makes me weep!

I would say exactly the opposite.
An over barrel mod makes an otherwise beautiful rifle look like a short, ugly club.
A slender forward mod, on the other hand, accentuates the graceful lines, and draws the eye in a pleasing way.

(No mod is best, of course. Provided that the foresight is in situ. Otherwise it looks a bit silly).

I am in your camp, over barrel gives you better balance and reduces overall length

Forget looks, think performance.

Moderators work by allowing the expanding gasses (that are turning a bullet into a projectile) to expand and cool prior to 'popping' out into the atmosphere which is at a much lower pressure.
Volume within the 'can' is key here as is number of baffles and their design along with the size of the hole (through which the bullet is passing) relative to the diameter of the bullet.

Vertex (over barrel) designs have a greater volume than a can hanging off the end of the barrel.
Vertex moderators are therefore more efficient at suppressing the BANG.

I am big fan of DPT moderators as you can get additional baffles and different sizes of vertex chambers and have a magnum chamber with additional 2 baffles on my 22-250.
If I tried to emulate that amount of suppression in front of the barrel it would be likely 180mm long.

I use dpt overbarrel mods on my hunting rifles. They are shorter and better balanced than a end of barrel mod.
For range use I use Jet z or ase end of barrel steel mods.

I don’t think any of them over barrel or end of barrel fitting do anything for the look of a rifle but that’s not why anyone has them.
It’s what they do noise reduction for your ears and the surroundings is what they’re about.
Purely a personal choice if it’s looks that matter.
Years ago I had a T8 but there wasn’t much out the now use SL5

I have both but I will say I prefer muzzle forward. Over barrels mods can mark the barrel which I suppose doesn't really matter and I don't particularly think (or care) that either variant looks good. Clearly rifles look better without but shoot miles better with.

Muzzle forward mods seem, to me anyway, to move the noise slightly further away from me. I have no idea if this is true or not and it is clearly subjective somewhat but I prefer using the end of muzzle cans rather than the over barrel mods. I cannot really give a definitive reason why. They both work. I have the over barrel mods on rifles where something shorter and more pointy is beneficial. Otherwise I always opt for end of muzzle.
