Shot a gold medal fallow buck and a 105kg boar in the same morning in Tuscany. Geico tm165 gn, both dropped on the spot. Great cartridge
For what it is worth, I am really beginning to take to the 7x64 for the big Fallow bucks we have in the South of England.
I have always wanted to try a .270 but I am recoil shy and too lazy to pull the bolt back that far, so I went for a 7mm08 !! Next thing I've got to find is some 7mm non toxic bullets ??
It's interesting that the C.I.P calls for a 7.25 (.285") dia bullet head for the 7 x 64 round rather than the standard 7.23 mm (.284") dia ???For what it is worth, I am really beginning to take to the 7x64 for the big Fallow bucks we have in the South of England.
Highland Calibre got to be 7x57. I've killed moose with my 7x57R. Southern fallow buck I've killed plenty with a .243 also loads with the .308. My favorite and much underated calibre at the moment is the 8x57R. The 8x57 is a great round and if i wanted just one bolt rifle now it would be in 8x57 its death to any game walking in Europe.
I've always like the 8x57 , it's a flexible and reliable cartridge . I've owned a few over the years and taken Deer , Moose and Black Bear with them , usually with a 195 to 200 gr bullet . The old Speer 200gr Hot Cores were perfect for most things . I could happily hunt with one for anything we have around here for the rest of my days .............. I won't , but I could lol .

If you want to be really trendy, 6mm Creedmoor (modern .243? but good luck getting factory ammo!).
If you want to be boring (but effective), .270 Winchester.
A .308 is fine but if you really want a 6.5 then it pains me to say get a Creedmoor, the 6.5 Swede is a relic.
6.5 Creedmoor is so last year! It's 6mm ARC now...
Bullets or Ammunition?I have always wanted to try a .270 but I am recoil shy and too lazy to pull the bolt back that far, so I went for a 7mm08 !! Next thing I've got to find is some 7mm non toxic bullets ??
Because they didn't know any better!!!!!!!!!!!!!Just ask yourself why the 270 is a very popular highland stalking rifle.![]()

I think that the 7.25mm/.285" bullet-diameter is from the table of maximum dimensions for the cartridge/bullet.It's interesting that the C.I.P calls for a 7.25 (.285") dia bullet for the 7 x 64 round rather than the standard 7.23 mm (.284") dia ???
