New Toyota Hilux Problems?

I've ordered a new Toyota hilux and I'm beginning to get a bit concerned about the number of people I'm hearing who are having electrical issues with them.

Is it just the old bad news travels easier than good or am I right to be concerned?

I'd welcome views from owners and former owners of the new models please..
Cheers Jimmy

I picked mine up in June and have done around 7k miles in it without any problems so far.
The cruise control and lane monitoring stuff went mental one day with warning lights flashing etc but it turned out the radar in the front badge was dirty and it was all good after I wiped it over.

The only couple of things that I’ve found annoying is filling the ad blue which in my opinion is in a stupid place and that the DPF regenerates about every 3-400 miles and it doesn’t always seem to do it when it’s logical ie driving on the motorway.

Overall I’m very happy with it so far

I think it's probably a vocal few, the first few years (2016-19) seemed to have some problems with windscreens cracking, bonnets not tightened (rattling), camera pod misting, parking sensors and DAB/satnav issues.
From what I've heard on Hilux Pickup Owners Club (HPOC) forums, these seem to have been remedied - apart from poor DAB reception and iffy satnav.

My biggest gripe is every time it’s damp/humid (early morning sun hitting it or 1-2am when dew falls and air cools), the alarm goes off no matter if it’s set, unset, locked with the key, you name it. All terminals/sensors checked many times, no faults,,,but still, many nights sleep lost and many unhappy neighbours.
Only solution I’ve found is now to leave it open all the time and hope it’s not stolen.
Trouble is when stalking, I can’t leave anything in the car as it has to stay open to avoid spooking every living animal earshot.

Toyota suggested I pay for a new ecu and new terminals/sensors, etc. Which costs about the same as a new medium sized car! Lol

For that, and the lack of a centre diff, l’OL be moving on and trying this Grenadier thing next time

Been running mine since January and as Milner mentioned above it does like to do a dpf regen, the only other issues I’ve had have not been problems as such but minor things like rubbish standard mats and a horn that sounds like it belongs on a toy car.
I’ve not had dab reception problems any worse than other cars I’ve driven and as for the satnav I always use android auto as I find most standard manufacturer navs lacking.
Oh and the truckman top tailgate jammed on one side but not really a Toyota problem.

Mike.

I’ve had mine (active extra cab) for 3 months and 4000 miles. The paint is terrible. I’ve rubbed it off the sills already getting in and out. It uses heaps of adblu. Two fills in 4000 miles and it regens every 200 or so miles. I put it down to doing a lot of forest road miles at 15mph.
Never had any other issues with it. It’s awesome and I’ll be keeping it forever. I am going to look at a new grenadier on Saturday though, so might need to save up for one of them as well!

Hi shabz, it's the. Extra cab I'm getting too, I ordered it back in March but won't be here until back of December unfortunately. Like you I'm wanting a keeper of a truck, im 55 an looking to go semi retired in a couple of years or so, wanting to buy once, cry once, then have piece of mind..

Have a look at getting some 3M helicopter clear tape for high use areas. I put this on my buck sills/lips and it's really helped stave off the wear.

I actually had a double cab on order which was due to arrive in April next year but this one became available because the guy who ordered it cancelled. I actually got it for the pre-increase price that the guy had ordered it at, so that was nice. My plan is to pay it off and then buy another small van or estate car for work and just keep the truck for shooting/towing/log duty type of stuff. It’s a ten year 100,000 mile warranty now, as long as you have it serviced by Toyota. Hopefully it will last a long time.

Definitely get the paint protected though! It’s garbage. Door protectors too, mine are all chipped.

Yes the the guy I dealt with at the dealer contacted me in March saying prices were due to rise so if I wanted to order I'd be best doing it by end of March. I'll bare in mind about paint protection. 👍🏻

my cousin is on his 3rd hilux windscreen after it keeps cracking. Not sure why but toyota checked the chassis for any faults. They couldnt find any so said they would swap for a different one if it happens again. its 6 mths old.

Had my 67 plate Hilux double-cab for almost 4 years and the quality is noticeably poorer than the 2009 plate model which i ran for 8 years prior, without any reliability issues.
In its third year the backing plate for the front disc brakes rotted away and fell off the 67 plate Hilux, then a front suspension spring went ping while leaving the house one morning. (Neither item covered by Toyota 5 year warranty.) Just had it back at Toyota garage this week as the rear differential oil seal (prop shaft connection) was leaking. (Thankfully repaired under warranty.) Must be common issues on the newer Hilux's as two friends have also reported broken front springs and leaking rear differential oil seals on their vehicles.
From my dealings with "Toyota customer relations" regarding the faults I have experienced with my 67 plate Hilux, I am extremely disappointed, as they are not one bit interested in customer care.

I don’t know of a solidly built pickup anymore - they are all garbage for the money, been down that road and went Ford Ranger - it was a disaster that cost an awful lot of money. My friend did the same at the same time with a hilux and had nothing but issues and a money pit - I hate to sound negative but they are just not well built anymore. They all seem to have concerning issues whether it be chassis rotting, engine failures, DPF failing. Electrical gremlins.

And it’s unfortunately a common thing with pickups - I have an old jeep that’s getting on for 100k miles and all I’ve needed was to fix an auto box filter that came loose, and an alternator pulley - other than that it hasn’t rotted out. The engine hasn’t failed yet and no major issues - my range didn’t make it to 22k miles before having a major failure.

How often do we hear of people having 70k miles of trouble free motoring with nothing but servicing?

Regards,
Gixer

I spoke to Toyota this morning about the adblue usage on my truck, she said that 3000 miles between fills is normal and all the people on the hilux forums are fibbing when they say they get 8-10,000 miles between fills. Me getting 2000 miles between fills is due to the short journeys that I take. I told her that I live in the middle of nowhere and never drive it less than 30 miles in one go but she was unaltered in her assessment. Must be the short journeys.

Like Gixer says above, all cars are crap now. They’ve been forced into being disposable by emissions regulations and are far too complicated for today’s spanner monkeys. Maybe we should all be in electric cars and fully commit?

Searching the internet for info about a new truck after you've pulled the pin is like looking in a medical dictionary when you've got a cough. Nothing but doom and panic.

As for adblue, I believe there are workarounds to turn the system off without getting a fault alert. Just make sure it's half full when it's dipped at MOT time.

Jesus, I’ve been in talks with local Toyota garage last two weeks about trading in mine for the new hilux, glad I’ve not signed off on it yet, looks like I will keep the ranger then, 100k abused you hell, missed services, and never had a fault.
