Nissan X-Trail - How good or bad ?

Does any of this forum members use the Nissan X Trail ?

I need a 4X4 vehicle wich is good on the road and which is useable for light off road work .
This for shooting and trialing my dogs . Frequently I have to drive longers distances on motorways and a few miles off road .
The X trail seems rather fast and comfortable and has more storage space tha a RAV4 . I would try to find a recent secondhand 2.2dci version. Fuel comsumption should be a lot lower than a landcruiser or a patrol .
I have a kangoo 4x4 van , wich is a very practical shooting car .Lots of space and good offroad although it lacks speed and comfort for longer distances .

I've been considering them as well. they are a decent size but the missus could still park it. I have asked lots of people that have them what they think and they all rate them highly. I have yet to find anyone that uses one for shooting but plenty of horsey types seem to like them.
i like the idea of the model with the leather interior.

A pickup like the L200 or Hilux will probably be a lot stronger and better offroad . In these the dogs get very warm in summer and very cold in winter . In an X trail or landcruiser type vehicle they benefit from the airco in summer and from the heating in winter when they are wet .
My Kangoo 4x4 is not bad , but lacks speed and gets very noisy once you drive faster than 110 km/h .
When trialing in France , Holland or Italy it's a hard job to get there .
The Xtrail has a max speed of 180 km/h . Driving 140 km/h over longer distances should be possible . This isn't possible with the Kangoo .
I also heard that the X trail isn't bad at all off road .

X trail

I was seriously impressed by these until the Freelander2 came out 3 years ago, my FL2 has now done almost 70k miles trouble free, last week on a trip to Oxfordshire and back I averaged 37 mpg fully loaded.

I use it off roaad frequently and it has been magnificent in the snow.

I like the X Trail but I prefer the FL2 - its worth a look

All round a good vehicle, the only problem i know of is the turbo has caused problems after 40k, of the 3 people i know who own them 2 have had this problem, but lets face it all vehicles have some weekness.
They all coped really well with the snowand ice recently.
Good power and fuel consumption.
Cheers

Also have a look at the misunishi outlanders. I drove a friends up to Aviemore a few weeks ago on the snow. Cruised comfortably and quietly at 80mph, handled all the slush no probe, and when it came to snowy roads- what snow? That vehicle regularly drives offroad to top of hills in the Borders. And carries five adults plus ski gear in loads of comfort. 40plus mpg as wel.

I see a lot poofsters driving x-tails.

I have a friend who drives one and absolutely hates it, hates his BS loan even worse.

Get a 96-00 4runner and never regret it. Unless you are a pansy.

Have a look at the pathfinder I had two on the business one was written off in a week the other gets abused on a daily basis .
I took it up to Malcs in October returned 32mpg not bad for a big motor,Comfy and a seven seater if needs be.

X-Trails are tops mate

Not serious off roaders but the right size and right money and reliable. I have a shogun now and it is to large for every day stuff and no bigger in side than the the x-trail. nicer inside though, x-trail interior was shite, new one is better. had three reds in the back no bother.

90% of stalking you are sorted

Had one for 3 years and 130000 miles. never missed a beat, stalked in it slept in it got stuck in it.

i would have another in a minute.

pathfinder is just a big x-trail, would have one no bother. sometimes the bigger motors are cheaper than the little uns. (hence i have a shogun LWB)

I would echo the Nissan Pathfinder.

Got an 05 plate running on AT2's. Greaty in the snow, great off road, and loads of space for dog, guns, etc. Got leather interior, but got some fitted seat covers to keep it fresh and nice big floor mats all round.

Fuel economy is unbelievable for such a big truck. During the summer it was averaging 33 mpg for my mixed roads 16 mile trip to work and weekend shooting miles.

Since the winter and fitting the AT2's, I have been averaging 31 mpg. Not sure if the drop is due to the cold weather or the tyres or a bit of both.

On a few days away in Dumfries and Galloway, I did a tankfull to tankfull fill up and got an amazing 38 mpg., so well happy with it.

Servicing is 2yr/18k miles although for piece of mind, I get it done anually/12k miles.

Because mine is registered before 23rd March 2006, its road tax is capped at band K (£215 per year) despite the emissions putting it into the highest at band M.

cheers

I've got one and it is excellent!
All the comfort of a posh car, bags of space, great towing vehicle, very economical, relatively low tax and insurance, 6 speed box, selectable 2WD/4WD/Diff lock/Auto from the push of a button even whilst driving, massive sunroof which you can shoot out of! The off-road side is good but it is not as robust as a Land Rover or similar. The tyres are the key to succes! ;)
Mine is fitted with General Grabber AT2's. Awesome in the snow and mud!
For the useage you describe it sounds perfect. 8)
MS :)

i have a x trail now and i love it, i had a freelander before and thought it was pants off road, I also have a pathfinder lent to me on a regular basis and i think that is a brill motor but the road tax is twice as much.
i would have another x trail anyday.
regards paul

How does the X-Trail perform off-road when compared to the usual suspects? (Land Cruiser, Discovery and Shogun)

I'm looking for something to replace my car and had been looking at Discoverys until Land Rover screwed me over. I fancy a Land Cruiser but there aren't many of those about so hard to get a decent 2nd hand one.

If I go for an X-Trail will I spend the next 3 years wishing I'd bought something more able? All views and opinons welcome.

I've been in a mate's 2.2 diesel X Trail a few times and it seems very good to me. The only thing I would say is that the panels are a bit lightweight and crumpled surprisingly easily when he hit a log pile. Another mate has a Freelander 2 and on balance, all things being equal I'd go for the Freelander but would be perfectly happy with the X Trail.

Interestingly when I was in the Middle East the most trusted 4x4 for going into the desert where a breakdown could be fatal was the Toyota Landcruiser, nearly always 100% reliable.

I think nothing compares to a Toyota Landcruiser . Look a television news you will see Toyota's , both Landcruiser and Hilux , wherever in the world where the going is tough .
I've been in Landcruisers , the 3 litre engine and the 4.2 litre engine and I can assure you these cars are good ( diesels ) . The big 4.2 is great on road and off road and easely does 300000 to 400000 miles . When you have the money , you would be a fool to buy anything else . Secondhand prices are so high that it's just to much for a secondhand car .

I also don't need a car for tough off road work . I drive 300/500 km to a trial and drive 2 km on bad tracks or on a wet piece of grasland . I would drive from Belgium to Scotland in winter to do some hind stalking and need a car that can get me save over snowy roads , etc .....
Reliability is the most important . When you are out alone hours from home , you wan't a reliable car that doesn't break down .

There is no question that the Land Cruiser is a nice car but there are reports that the current engine is prone to catastrophic engine failure related to seals around the injectors, similar to the Isuzu problem. In Ireland Toyota are fixing the seals under a recall, in the UK Toyota are denying there is anything wrong. I live in Northern Ireland so if I drive a few miles then the LC has a serious problem that needs fixing and if I come back into the UK then there is nothing wrong that we are aware of I've no idea where you're getting your information from sir.

I'd love a LC and might still end up with one but there aren't many out there on the 2nd hand market at the sort of age/money/condition I'm looking. This is causing the dealers to ask silly money - the last one I was offered was nearly £6k above the book price from a dealer. I don't might paying the right money for the right car but I'm not paying £6k more hence why I'm looking at other options.

Like any car , the newer and more electronics the worse I think.
A friend has the 4.2 lit ( in Belgium model 100 ) . A tremendous car .
Drives 140/150 km/h on the motorway , no noise , loads of power and very comfortable .
The seats are about 50% wider than in an average car .
In very difficult off road situations , he gets through without much trouble and you never hear the engine . He pulls a 3 ton trailer without any effort .
To be honest , I have never been in a better car .
Watch the Top Gear demolisching test of a Hilux .
I think they are very good . But there will be others wich are also good .

Like you say , the secondhand prices are FAR to high to be acceptable . Thats why I am looking for something else . I also don't need that brutal power and off road capacities .

nissan x-trail good or bad

In my expeirence the x-trail Columbia I had new in 06, has been a very usefull
vehicle for me, good off road in all but the very heavyest going, loads of room
in the back with the seats down, level load deck so you can sleep in it.
Fuel consumption 35ish, good speed on motorway, slightly commercial feel
about it,not as quiet as my wifes new RAV4,but excellent for what I do,
stalking ,pigeon and gameshooting, towing a 25ft boat, would recommend one.
howzat.
