Out last night.

I've seen one fox so far this year. By this time last year I had 12 in the bag, but they just don't seem to be around this year, and that one I have seen, was nowhere near where I shoot :(
so, if anybody wants to help me recover from my withdrawal symptoms, give me a shout ;)

Pete

Every Vixen shot this last month has been well in cub, including Friday nights contender, an early bath job @ ten to eight, taken on an eighteen acre place we have left alone for maybe getting on for two years, due to the guy having a bit of partner trouble, he was very pleased to see me & his parting gift of fresh Duck eggs was a nice surprise.

I think the cubs are very early this year. There was one run over in a back lane near here two weekends ago. Consequently, I think the adults are being more wary than usual until the little ones are a bit more independent.

I've had a very quiet few weeks after a particularly purple patch. Just started to see a few moving about this weekend. Hopeful things will pick up !!

We had 24 in January, 16 in Feb, and have had 2 so far this month. It should have been more, but my mate seems to be very good at missing easy foxes...

Very quiet on the foxes in my area too,we have covered more than 2000 acres in the last 2 weekends and not seen a single fox this is not wastelands but a commercial chicken farm ,a country estate and a shoot and I would have expected to see and shoot a few.

On the Bunnies last night, with one eye keeping a look out for the Fox that's been doing pickups on Mike's victims during last week, shot a lot of brass off, due to the legacy of the two railway lines that occupy a good bit of the ground, keeping a small bag full for doggy treats, around ten o'clock, I was made to jump by a Fox calling, sounded a little different to the usual racket they make, I'm assuming it was calling cubs.

Went to my bit of lambing ground near Tarporley Friday night, had no losses on this bit due to our pressure on Charlie but had a score card of Finnbear nil .. Foxes four, all scope lineups were fouled by either power lines or some other obstruction.......

Over on Mike's home patch yesterday,a great deal of stubble & standing maize to go at,soon as we pitched up in full sunlight a fox was heard barking,so after deciding who was going to be where, I set up on the back of the truck, ranging different points for quick reference,it looked like the combine had no bottom in it when he did my field!, so Mike & his pigeon shooting buddies will be at it today:D,

I was covering two fields by having an entry way through a thick hedgerow, one off the truck & one off sticks, the full shootable distance was out to a little over four hundred in places, back & forth through the gap over a period of about twenty minutes, then I spot a reddish brown blur right at the very end of the field I'm on sticks in, well that wasn't there before?..... sure enough the bino's confirm it is Charlie, lolling about in the sun ..... not having had much in the way of stalking recently, I decided I would risk creeping down the stubble:scared:, trying for a gap in the hedge on the truck side as I went, walking on eggshells? no, more like giant light bulbs! finally get a gap directly opposite the fox at a ranged 81 yards, still no sign of getting busted, but I need to negotiate myself down a deep dry ditch & up onto a knee, poking rifle through the growth & two strands of barbed wire, I can feel the mozzies feasting on my bottom lip & chin:doh: forgot to deet up! Charlie sits up to consider a hare for tea, bye bye Charlie.

A little later just enough light to shoot by without a lamp, & I hear Mike's 22.250 take another.
A good day out on some ground I haven't been too for a good while.

Just when you think you know your badger,... out on a place last night, that suffered a great deal of neospora thingummy stuff, we shot a great number of fox in a short period of time, things got better re the dropped foetus business, haven't seen a fox on here for months, but badgers are in great evidence, the fields I usually stake out have a resident population of hares, & these can be a great early warning system, last nights entertainment was a version of the Waterloo cup but with mr badger taking the place of the longdog , the badger, one of three in the field started to quarter towards one hare, I thought no, this can't be, I know they will take dead & injured / youngsters, but a full grown healthy adult ?, as badger got closer to hare up comes the ears & the race was on, I have seen some fast moving badgers but this one was doing the bolt thing, hare gets boxed into a corner of the field with a busy dual carriageway on one side & the lane on the other, a severe swerve got the hare out of trouble but only just ,... to complete the nights show, a barn owl stooped playfully on another hare, had enough, packed up & rv'd with Mike & Ian at the golf course to adjourn for last orders. Farmer is getting worried now as he is due the TB visit just before Christmas.:suss:

Last Friday night's watch on my designated bit of ground, was frustrating to say the least, a pair of fox came out of the hedgerows onto the field, up with the bins, yep deffo fox, but, no shot/s as the glass was full of M/way traffic , tracked them back & to, back & forth, then they vanished behind one of the two ponds... never saw them again, then two shots in close succession from Ian about 600 metres away on another patch :), found out later he was bunny bashing :(, Mike's call today tells me the patch Ian was on got a daylight raid yesterday, 3 chooks down, so the game is on for before tea time today.

I hope you get the culprit! We only got one fox last night - there was light mist which played hell with the NV, so I had to wait until I got a good enough sight picture before I took the shot. It proved to be a large dog fox, which I counted out at 263 paces - not too shabby off sticks! He was fox number 116 since Jan 1st.

I nailed two out of three the other night ,plus a few bunnies for the pot, last one kept safe did a full circle on the farm lane so couldnt shoot i finally said sod it put lamp off took sticks down flicked lamp on and the bugger was coming at me like a train ,it had winded the bunnies in the bag i think plus i had put light out,but i will get him eventually,

Been a really slow year for me. Up to a massive 2 so far. Yup that's right. 2.
was out tonight with a local gamekeeper and just picked up some price foxing land 10 minutes from home.
I think I may be getting busy. Yay.

Well they do say if your not in it, you can't win it.................. 8 hours blank, but did get some entertainment from Billy Buzzard before dark on a burst bunny, prolly try again today.

I was a bit surprised i could still see with the scope at ten o,clock upto ,i paced it 260yrds, put scope down and couldnt see squat,
