BASC met the new Policing Minister, Sarah Jones MP, to raise concerns affecting the shooting community, including a forthcoming consultation on plans to merge shotgun and firearms licensing.

During the meeting with the minister, BASC underlined the sector’s commitment to high standards and public safety, while stressing the need for an evidence-led approach to any future proposals. We made clear that we strongly oppose any plans to merge shotgun and firearms licensing.

The discussion also covered the performance of police licensing departments, the use of medical markers, and Firearms Enquiry Officer (FEO) training. BASC reaffirmed our support for the national rollout of FEO training and highlighted the need for greater consistency and efficiency within the licensing system.

On the same day as the meeting, BASC also delivered a keynote speech at a national firearms licensing conference.

BASC’s executive director of communications and public affairs, Christopher Graffius said: “We welcomed the opportunity to meet the new Policing Minister and to set out our priorities on behalf of the shooting community.

“We made it clear that BASC will be fighting tooth and nail on behalf of our members and all those who shoot, against any attempts to merge shotgun and firearms licensing, and that we expect government decisions to be grounded in evidence, not ideology.

“We also raised our concerns about the Crimestoppers campaign in Cumbria and deterioration in the performance of licensing departments.

“BASC will continue to engage closely with the Home Office and policing partners to ensure that the licensing system protects public safety while working efficiently and proportionately for lawful certificate holders.”

indeed, but i was hoping BASC and others would inform their membership and get this petition over the 100,000

Obviously I’ll sign the petition as a shooter it was forwarded to me by another shooter,
But this is just another example of being seen to do the democratic thing then completely ignoring it!
Section 2 is doomed, it’s just another step to zero private ownership of guns in whatever guise they fall under,
I’m 69 now so whatever system is in place I’ll be able to continue till the very end,
The lead ban will finish lots of clay shoots
Just another few slashes in the death of a thousand cuts people

According to the GOV website, there were 147,140 firearm certificates on issue as at 31 March 2023 and there were 500,894 shotgun certificates on issue as at 31 March 2023. And the petition has not reached 20k yet!
Needs sharing, spreading and educating. Every rifle range and clay club should be telling people to get it signed. All those sitting in their hides looking for pigeons and ducks and do not think this will not effect them, are in for a shock, especially the clay community. If this does not unite shooters, we are all doomed.
Share as much as you want, I'll say it again, the apathy in the shooting community is pathetic (I have signed and shared btw)

Am I the only only one not bothered?

One ticket less ball ache, surely it should improve the system

I hope you’re the only one.

The sorts of additional consequences this will have:

1. Under 18s can only shoot at all if they have their own ticket or are a member of a club.
2. Non certificate holders can only shoot if under the estate rifle exemption, as a member of a club or on one of the limited open days clubs are allowed.
3. If you have a certificate granted for vermin, you can’t go to a clay ground unless you have an appropriate condition added, and they only do that if you become a member and vice versa if you get granted for clay and someone asks you if you fancy sitting in a hide.
4. You can’t replace your shotgun unless you sell the old one and put in a 141.
5. You’ll need another safe to put your cartridges in.
6. You need to get land approval for your shotgun until you’re considered ready for an open condition.

I could go on, but a complete move to s1 will have lots of extra consequences, all bad for shooting, that aren’t a direct result of needing good reason.
