I could use some advice on the above please, as I know very little.

I have recently asked advice over getting a second rifle in the same calibre for night vision purposes, which I must admit, I really like. However, someone has suggested that if I fit a rail I can put an ordinary scope on and off without loss of zero, same goes for the Photon, but I'm not sure how this might work in reality.

I have a Tikka TX1 which I would like to use for both night and day work.

Could someone kindly explain how this might work and what I should be searching for.

Maybe this helps: On the top all my scopes on different rifles I have a scope ring with Picatinny rail, this allows me to use different torches (Red LED, Green LED) which are mounted in a fully adjustable cradle. This is useful for foxing and wild boar, and often (after deer-legal hours) I would use a scope mounted torch on a deer rifle because you sometimes come across a fox. Switching takes a few seconds.
On all my rifles I have a Picatinny rail so I can move different scopes and optics onto different rifles. I have recently spent some time trying to work out which good but cost-effective QD (Quick Release) mounts to buy and found some eye-watering prices and systems. However the Warne Maxima QD Rings seem to work well, are widely available in the UK, and offer me the right compromise between price and quality. Switching scopes/optics takes a few seconds.
 
I find Warne rings fiddly to fit - I don't have three hands. Also some folk claim to have issues with vertically split rings. I have used Warne rings, I won't use them again. Regards JCS
 
I’ve very recently done just this for one of my rifles. I already had the picitinny rail mounted on the rifle. I brought American defence QD mounts from optics warehouse for my scope, Having researched the ones I wanted. I got a QD mounts for my pulsar NV. During that zeroing process I took both on/off several times and both returned back to zero, I’ve had a few outings with this set up so far I’m still very happy with it.
 
I use this method also I use a Midwest Industries qd mount and tested on/off several times with no loss of zero. As long as you check and test, check and test. Good quality mounts are a must though, UTG mounts are not as such so steer clear of them lol.

I believe Mark Ripley (260rips) uses warne QD rings on his .223 and test on a 300m target with excellent results.

I like and use Warne rings. I think they are very high quality, especially for the price.

But.

Horizontally split rings make scope mounting easier. The vertical split is more fiddly.

I am happy with the trade because it isn’t as though one frequently has to remove and replace them from the scope body.

The QR system reliably returns to zero. They are widely available, reasonably priced, steel and I find them aesthetically pleasing, or at least, they look a lot better than most Weaver/Picatinny rings.

They will chew up aluminium bases however, but I think any steel rings would do the same.
 
Warne also do Mountain Tech rings, which are horizontal split. I would imagine a QD version won't be far off.

I swap scopes between various rifles. Leupold QR work fine for me, as does the Recknagel I have on one of the rifles.
 
I have rails on all my rifles and only use Burris Zee signature rings. Sadly they do not make a QD version. Mounting a Photon can be a pig of a job but the Burris rings allow you to make large adjustments prior to fine tuning. If you have the correct rail and space your rings with care you can if necessary is undo the locking bolt, remove and slide the scope and mounts off the rifle and use reverse procedure to re attach other scope. It will depend alot on the make/design and quality of the rails you have fitted, those with slightly rounded edges are more amenable to this than the sharp edged ones.

Just done the same thing for my Tika TX1. Brought a set of Recknagel Quick release mounts. Not the cheapest, I’m sure there are more expensive ones, but very pleased with them. Work very well.

I thought Mark Ripley uses Sports Match qr. After seeing his video's I put one on my Alpex 4K with no issues.
 
One more vote for American Defence QD mounts, I’ve used them on my Tikka and it’s repeatable within about 1/4 moa. 1 set for each scope of course, unless you only need the room in the gun cabinet 😳

Yep I stand corrected bud, good mounts and I wish Sportsmatch would update their mounts with a picatinny ring top option for lads who want to run external IR
