Police Advice that "Stalking for the purposes of deer control is permitted. ... “social distancing” advice should be complied with"

There have been many posts about whether we can go stalking or not.
Please see under the "Out stalking during restrictions" thread, the question I put to Gloucestershire Constabulary yesterday and the response I received today, abbreviated as per the title of this thread. I have sent the original text to BASC and BDS.

I'm all for freedom of choice - how about if you can get a permit from the police to go about unnecessary business as you please the cost being that, should something happen to your or your family, you and your family are not entitled to any medical treatment until such time as the government declares the virus "defeated?" This would allow people to make an informed decision.

A lot of people in hospital beds are there because of accidents, including traffic accidents, so staying off the road and in your own house doesn't just reduce transmission of this virus but it also reduces the pressure on NHS beds. A quick "back of fag packet" calculation indicates that if everyone stayed home it would increase the number of people the NHS can treat during this pandemic by about 12,000. If one of the 12,000 is you or a family member then this number becomes very important indeed.

Just tell me what harm is being done by getting into your own vehicle, driving on your own to your permission, stalking on your own, shooting a deer taking it hame and hanging it in your chiller???????? Now, I'm all ears ;-)

A slip of a knife,a traffic accident ,a fall will all use resources desperately needed else where. And I know these things are more likely to happen at home.Weve a contract to shoot foxys for sheep protection and the farmer wants it done.Im in two minds middle of the night, middle of nowhere .

The areas where I stalk are too full of people during the daytime now since "lockdown". It's full of townie Interlopers in their droves around here. Dim wits with dogs and kids roaming all over the place on a jolly and well off the footpaths. There couldn't be a worse time to go stalking. I've never seen it as busy apart from New Year's day and Boxing day.

You'd have to go out at 5am to stand any chance of success, but at that time with no cars on the road you'd be highly likely to get pulled up by a copper, and I don't fancy that conversation, so I wont be going.

My friend who is a full time Grouse Keeper is still in full swing, working alone and keeping ontop of the vermin. Hopefully there wont be too many Sabs lurking around during lockdown but I doubt that to be true.

I have been heavily involved on the estate in the spring with the fox control now for a number of years. Not sure where I stand now? Full time keepers are deemed to be ok, I'm not full time but contribute alot during Spring time.

Not sure what to do? Litters of cubs around the moor can be devastating when the broods hatch. 2 years ago we had 10 litters around the fringes of the Moor. Too much for one man to deal with, and he needs my help. Hope it's not like that again this Spring! Cant see years of hard work go down the pan.

Same as I've been told BT

And why would we try it on anyway ,

Feckin fools need to wind there necks in ,

Wonder how it works for foxing,we’ve a contract to shoot them for a farmer he’s a food producer, plus we’re in Scotland.

Always follow your PM’s advice, we voted him in did we not?
We also voted Michael Gove in who I was quoting, not sure what your point is. Do you always unquestioningly follow politicians' advice?
I have no intention of going out shooting during the lockdown, I was pointing out where some of the confusion was coming from and giving a sane view of the other side in a thread dominated by people saying "anyone that disagrees with me is a f***ing idiot". Everyone just enjoy the sunny weather in your own back gardens!

From Kent email going around.

The advice from the Police Officer is that although there is nothing in place for them to intervene in our efforts to protect crops, as long as the rules of the general licence are adhered to, eg. Gas guns; string bangers; scarecrows etc. However, travelling to and from affected areas would contravene government guidelines on non essential travel, and you could be issued with a fixed penalty notice.

Stay home stay safe, keep your loved ones safe and keep your guns for another day.

Can someone please explain how the current shopping system is keeping anyone safe ffs .You queue outside then are let in ,once in you are free to go wherever you like lol ,reach over people ,brush past people and unless you are wearing gloves ,potentially touch goods others have touched .Its a farce all round with everyone just going through the motions like fecking sheep .If we are to believe China has it under control its because they enforced policy not leave joe idiotic public to please himself .
Im all for democracy ,honestly but harsh times require harsh policy .
If we end up like Italy then it’s only down to one thing ....us .

My advice for what its worth is not to undertake any recreational stalking.
If your job is a full time deer stalker and you live on the estate then I don't see why you should not be allowed to carry on any exceptional work that is required. The season for does in England is just about at an end so there should not be much left to do. The Roe buck season is about to start, but it will not be an issue in my opinion to leave this for a month anyway.
If you live on a farm and can be sure of self isolation then I don't see an issue. However many of you need to travel to stalk deer and in this case it is not allowed. Its up to all of us to help out where we can, and not to help spread the virus. You may also find yourself on the wrong side of the law if you attempt to go out, and are pulled over by the police. Don't forget to own an FAC you need to be classed as a RESPONSIBLE person. If you are fined you will also find that on your next renewal there could be an issue with your being granted it.
Fines are now being issued and anyone who thinks that they can get away with this by saying I need to go stalking is kidding themselves. Also I would rather NOT SEE any stupid remarks about how to get round this current regulation, as this does not look well on us as responsible people owning and using firearms and being members of this site.

It’s not designed to keep anyone absolutely safe it’s designed to keep some of the economy working and the level of infection and deaths to a level the NHS can cope with and society will accept. Which was why the 60% herd idea was dropped.

You venture out for what ever purpose totally at your own risk hence the 12week lockdown for the very vulnerable.
I for one will be wearing gloves when I next go food shopping, the only face mask I have is an industrial one so that may be a step to far.

"If you are fined you will also find that on your next renewal there could be an issue with your being granted it"

I've even heard that your FAC will be revoked or you will get charged with misuse of a firearm if you are stopped.

I do not think this will stand in court (not that I have any appetite for testing it). AFAIK, currently the fine for breaching lockdown rules is £30 and no criminal record.
Any FAC implications (especially, a misuse of firearm charge) would be completely disproportionate to the current penalties prescribed by law.

E.G. if you are found driving a car without a good reason, would you lose your drivers license and get a ban from driving for 12 years?
If you drive to a remote location to walk your dog, would you get banned from keeping animals?

Please stay at home unless you absolute have to go out - this is commons sense ffs, and is for the benefit of public safety.
But the things one hears in regard to stalking seem to be the usual, completely unnecessary gun-owner bashing. I just do not understand why the police feel the need to start scaremongering and threatening people.

In the meantime there are lycra-clad cyclists all over the place covering 15-20 miles a day as their "daily excercise". Fecking madness.
