Save this, below, which could ("back office" and sequitur) mean licensing, or could mean firearms crime, or police firearms response teams I see no other mention of firearms and not any of any centralised firearms licensing authority.

9. The current force structure has been in place for 60 years but is no longer fit for purpose. Having 43 separate police headquarters, each providing back-office functions to local policing, means we are wasting money that could be reinvested in the frontline. Fewer forces would provide more effective specialist services in areas like major crime and firearms, while also being better able to deal with surges in demand and major incidents. Over this Parliament and the next we will radically reform the structure of policing, significantly reducing the number of police forces.

Heard also on the radio last week that their intention is to have ‘city’ forces not county ones as the current arrangement does not reflect/meet the needs of the cities. True but the problem with modern policing isn't saving a bit of money off fleet buying policy.

I would be extremely cynical about this whole idea. It won't be for the benefit of the tax payer or the non criminal that's for sure. Think it's bad that they're closing all the police stations. Wait till mega forces come in to play.

Central purchasing consortiums haven't always worked out in the past. In fact they can be a total disaster costing the organisation more and supplying unsuitable equipment.
