Good question and one I have pondered loads...

The laser takes seconds, and I do mean seconds, maybe 10 per blade, it is a phenomenal thing to watch, the laser that cut those blanks will cut steel up to around 12" thick, just imagine how deftly it handles 3mm.

Compare that to cutting by bandsaw, fine shaping and the drilling, well there is no comparison, BUT, laser cutting isn't cheap in the quantities that I can use the service, I'm not about to put 1000 blanks on the workshop floor.

Monetary wise I might be a little out of pocket, I love the blanks though, and the skeletons that are left behind, and in all honesty, there is little skill involved in cutting and shaping a steel blank, it is what happens after that that will begins to form it into the knife it will be.

I’m the same as you Stuart , laser cutting is just so much easier , been doing it for 10 years , certainly not cheap but it just means consistent results , precision down to fractions of a mm and the best part in my opinion is bur free holes , no countersinking and huge voids for epoxy . But as you say , it isn’t a cheap option .
 
Hello all, a bit of an update for you :)

All blades are now heat treated and ready for the grinding of the primary bevels, I am hoping that I can make inroads into that next week.

Teeny, tiny glitch, I was in hospital about 10 days ago for a 'routine procedure', I was told not to do anything for two weeks and then stay on light duties for six weeks, Tuesday coming is my two week time served and I am hoping that steadily grinding away at these blades sits inside the light duties heading.

I was in the workshop yesterday for a potter and I could feel myself that the two weeks advice at the very least is sound advice.

I'll need to adapt how I grind them a little, a bit less aggressive, a bit less force, it'll just take a bit longer that's all, it will not make a jot of difference to the finished product.

Photos below, blades now fully HT'd and ready to be introduced to that 36 grit abrasive belt, also a mate of mine has a huge vibro finishing/deburring machine, I also took the liberty of throwing them in there, that cleans them all up post HT and just makes them nicer for me to grip and hold during grinding, proper luxury that 😂

Morning all, couple of things...

Still plodding with the primary bevel grinding, progress is still slower than I would like but it is still good.

I have also splashed out on a new supply of Hunter Orange G10 for the handles, it comes with a built in G10 liner, it is very posh and I can't wait for it to arrive. I'll post a photo of it when it does.

With all nicely ticking over my thoughts are now turning to the sheaths, as of right now the deal is still the supplied sheath will be a hand made leather one (photos of which at the start of this thread), I am also still exploring the Kydex option too though.

To that end I'll be dropping you all a line over the weekend, at the very least I'll need to know of you are right or left handed, but also your preferred sheath option, stick with the leather, potential Kydex or both.

Swapping leather for potential Kydex would be covered by the agreed price, upgrading to both would see an additional cost, that cost needs a figure putting on it which is a little unknown at present but for the sake of argument right now I'll set that figure at £50.

Once/if I have a Kydex option that I am happy with I'll post photos but it will be all you'd expect, good fit, good retention, with a belt loop but I'll try and build something in there to make it fit for safe neck carry too.

Feel free to answer these questions here if you like, I'll not miss it. Other than that I'll drop you a line at some point over the weekend.

I will go with leather (but would like to see pic of Kydex before 100% commiting) & I am right-handed, with both sheaths be hanging or will scout carrying be an option?
