-powder prices-

Outlaw, please pardon my ignorance, but what is 4H31SC?
I normally recognise most powders, but you have me on this one.

Powder

Viht. N140 at £50 a kilo is very, very cheap, I wish I could get a supply at that price.
That works out at about £22.80 per pound.
I was pleased recently to get a couple of 1 pound tubs for £55.75 and that works out at about £61 per kilo.

HWH.

I always brought my powder, Varget from Andersons of East Grinstead.
The last tub i brought there was 37.99
But while Working down in Canterbury i popped over to Wilson's And Wilson's for a few bit's and a nose around.
And would you believe it, Varget is 29.99 a tub!!!
So 4 made their way home with me that night... :-D

I was working in Canterbury again this weekend so i popped over to Wilsons again (it would have been rude not too :-D )
And the price of Varget has gone down!!!!
Its now 29.87 a tub, so a couple more made it home with me :-D

Hodgdons powders are running at £36 / 1 lb tub here in N Ireland. I bought three last week.

RL7 Can't be had for love nor money. Any RL7 or RL22 in England?

A Year Later

I've just got a kilo of viht N-500 for £76 I think it was,a few pounds more than the price advertised online.

So I went to my local smith, & bought the last tub of varget he had,at last years prices, because I believe that is up to £42 lb now

Another thought: I've been looking at reloading tables to check for savings there...

Think of it this way: two loads for the same bullet can be of similar velocity, but the faster powder typically has a lower charge, suppose one is 48 grains, the other is 43 grains, that's a 10% saving.

Also, if you're thinking about what cartridge for your rifle, say 308 vs 30-06, the 308 is not that far behind ballistically but it uses far less powder!

And perhaps you can live with a lower charge and a bit less muzzle velocity? Maybe even a different (heavier?) bullet of the same cost?

I think you may be onto something here, if a mid range centre fire is just deer legal, then no doubt it will still do the job.
The way the sums work out for my .308 is a drop from 45gr to 42gr will give me an extra 7 rounds per lb,if I have done my maths properly.

The possiblity is that trajectory would be a bit more loopy, especially If I try to drive a heavier bullet more slowly, with a slower powder.

I have heard that in load development there is a point where extra powder has no beneficial effect upon velocity.

Also that some .30 cal 165gr bullets wont expand much on roe, so there is a bit of research to be done.

Like my gunsmith says "a big heavy bullet going slowly will knock the deer down well".
