Price of puppies..

OK so I had heard that pup prices in the UK had gone ridiculous but to be honest it was just in passing comment with someone due to me getting an email asking if I'd got a litter on from an ad I put on a site 5 years ago when I last bred a litter. so didn't bother looking. But having just seen an ad for some pups at more than twice what I'd imagine they would have been last year I decided to go look online...
JEEZZZZ.... What's gone on ? Has this covid thing made everyone want a dog to go walking with ?
I wonder how many will be in the pound come winter when is cold an ****ing it down and someone has had a grueler at graft an nobody wants to walk it...
OK rant over.. Normal service resumed..

Yes certainly seems that way. I have been enquiring with various breeders about cockers and springers and there’s a certain sort who are charging way over the norm for the dogs atm. More greed than breed. If you look around and enquire with like minded folk who have a litter for sale, prices are indeed a lot higher than normal but in my opinion not absurd. Recently was offered an ESS pup from amazing lineage, sire was British championship winner etc. pup was sub £1k. When you see adverts at £3k+ for a cocker or springer with no lineage of sire/dam or health scores and are purely pets I genuinely have a wtf moment.

Just sold a litter of 9 pups within 12 hours of posting the advert, Two years ago struggled to get much interest and finally sold the last one at a well reduced price at 14 weeks. My phone has not stopped ringing for days as people seem desperate to get a dog at any price, was offered £3000 to have one that had already been reserved!!!!
Worlds gone crazy but as you say how many will end up in the pound or rescue centre.

Yep, lots of stories of inflated prices ("ordinary" bred cockers going for c.£2k around here) and folk losing out on pups they'd put a deposit on as someone had come in and offered silly money. There are still some very genuine breeders out there who aren't taking the mick... Put a deposit on a very well bred ESS on Friday and that is under £1k.

I have been looking at getting a lab for a gun dog but I’m not paying £2-3k for a dog that is nothing special in bloodline.
I sold JRT pups a few years back for £200 I seen a advert for JRT pups last week for £1200 people have gone mad.
I feel sorry for the dogs as they are a big responsibility and these yuppie folk that are paying over the odds won’t have the time once this carry on is all over and they go back to work.

My GWP is 9 years old now, I found her purchase receipt recently, £430. I am currently waiting for a pup to be weaned at present as a replacement to bring on, no price has been set yet , but I expecting if to be the £2k mark 🙈

The prices are currently bonkers in my opinion. Some will say a puppy is worth what people are prepared to pay, I disagree. The value and the subsequent price should be based on the quality - quality of sire and dam, quality of bloodline and quality of rearing. Just because prices suddenly inflate, the quality remains the same.

I will add that two top-quality show breeder friends of ours with 25 years experience each have kept their prices below £1500 whereas second rate pet breeders are asking £2000-£3500 for wirehaired dachshunds.

It’s ridiculous & unfortunately a result of the usual problem...... while people are stupid enough to pay above the odds, prices will keep going up! My first springer was KC reg, good bloodline/strong FTC lineage but only cost £150 less than 20 years ago..... plus he was a proper sized ESS, not a rebadged Cocker. Can hear the younger generation on here saying ‘that’s a long time ago’ but what else has increased in cost by 75-100% in the same period? As to those who bought pups during the Covid lockdown - welcome to a generation of poorly socialised, separation anxiety ridden disasters!

I cant see how anyone on planet earth can justify paying 1.5k+ for a 8/10 week old puppy. Unproven regardless of breed. Your dad could be Ronaldo it doesnt mean youre guaranteed to be a world class footballer. Strong money for a trained dog is a slightly different story.

Im sure those that have paid 3k for a puppy will be very quiet on this.

To be fair Josh, I would pay the money for exceptional 'dream team' breeding and yes, it would be a risk but....The puppies I am seeing at £2000-£3500 are far from exceptional bloodlines, in fact most punters don't even know what dogs are in the bloodline.."Oh there is a pedigree at the back of the cupboard somewhere, I'll have to look for it"...Morons.

Thats fair enough Keith but it is a considerable amount of money to risk on a dog imo, clearly more sense if great pedigree but still no guarantees. The other thing that makes me laugh... user on here selling over priced pups (you know the breed), not a supporter and all his activity in past 8 months has been on classified ads either buying or selling... not of much use to the site imo but hey ho

I can drive to germany and get a BGS with a 100 year proven pedigree and get change out of £1500 euros including travel.

why people feel the need to spend £2k plus for a dog here I do not know.

especially when you don’t know what your going to get.

where as in Germany if the dogs do not make the required standard they are not bred, it’s all about the dog and the work and not the money.

i know all this is fact because I’ve done it and would not hesitate to do it again.

My dogs parents had 8 health checks each and the pups are probably the best bred in the UK and cost much less that the breeder could have got. They all went to vetted homes but what boils my pi☆☆ are the mongrels with no health checks at all going for thousands. Cocapoos, springadors , labradoodles etc.

And they'll of had the keep of it till its 15 weeks too..
Yes indeed, my dog has 2 masters me and the other is in Germany!

every year when we visit to hunt and work, she Just let’s herself in and makes herself comfortable, she hasn’t forgotten her German father.

they spoil her in fact, the bugger gets away with murder when we are there.

Wait 6 months and the price will crash once the new dog owners realise what they've taken on and the novelty has worn off. £2k for any working hunting dog is just plain bonkers. Sadly I can see a that there will be a lot of dogs that will need re-homing by Christmas.
