Private number plates.

The private number plate; possibly the single most pointless item on planet earth??
No. It depends on what you want it to do for you. Quite a few use it to hide the age of a vehicle. Thus you will often see it on some coaches used by coach operators for that reason. Or to hide the fact that the vehicle that seems to be the same one your have had for four or five years is being changed for the latest model every two years. So it isn'y merely vanity but also sound commercial practice.

I just like them, and certainly don’t need to justify it with anyone. 👍

My tuppence (strongly in the my choice corner) is they are great for hiding the age of a vehicle - only ever bought one new car and regretted doing that! They are also an investment!

I have 5 fitted or on retention - 2 for the children's cars. Bought the wife M155 XXX where XXX were her pre-marriage initials (she used those all her working career) and I bought YY XXX it being my initials then hers. Replaced that last year with one that spells my forename initials and surname 🤗 I have also got 2 with variations on the YY bit, so as the wife call's it, we have a "taxi fleet" 🤦‍♂️

Only disappointment was that one was bought to put on the quad but you cannot change the registration of an agri quad

Private plates are a bit of fun and can be an investment at he higher end (low number of characters). All of the dealers who sell plates will handle the transfer process for you but it is easy and DVLC give good instructions online. Be careful if buying a plate directly from another individual, I would recommend an escrow process.

Make sure you negotiate on price, often the same plate will be listed on numerous websites at different prices, this is often due to different margins applied by trade sellers. You can also hold plates on a certificate rather than on a vehicle but you do have to pay a small renew fee every 10 years. I own a 3 digit plate that is now worth a lot of money and worth at least 2-3 times the value of my vehicle. Some plates have increased in value considerably over the last few decades. To me you just have to look at it as a bit of fun. I told my son that I need a grandson with the same first initial to pass it down to ....lol

Good luck finding an interesting plate that means something to you.

Yep. I sold a plate for £6k I paid £450 for from dvla

I at one time used to transfer 619 HLP from the old Triumph Vitesse 6 it came on from my successive cars. As others said as there was value in it. Eventually sold it via Elite Registrations for £1000 in about the mid 1990s.
