Recoil Management

:tiphat:

I stalked a wood (mainly muntjac) both have a .270 as a few fallow, Simon used a fixed power scope, mine at the time was my Z6 2.4-15x56
The thermal spotter worked well picking out lots of muntjac in the brambles also the fallow. I would wind the scope right back and then out, move a bit L-R as that way I could see any close branches with the low mag. Clear path wind the mag up whack, we still chat about a fallow to this day as it took me 10 mins to find the path it was back to the 70's with the golden shot up a bit left a bit but I got it.
With respect that sort of practice you cant do on a range which has cropped up during this thread.
Of course you can't , but the aim of practicing is to work on the variables that you can perfect, even away from a stalking situation. And it doesn't have to involve a firearm at all, e.g. you can practice approaching deer with binoculars or a camera on public access land, or even just try creeping up on a rabbit on a footpath.

or hit a branch 🤪

Just because it was not mentioned doesn't mean it never happens.
@bottletopbill came over from Kent to join Paul and myself on a plot Paul has, way before the wood set him a 100yd hardox target as he had not used his rifle for a while.
2 dry fires please Bill, ok click x2 2 rounds in the hardox that's fine. :old:

Recoil Management. There are endless discussions on “my rifle won’t group”. And I have seen people go through the doom loop of constantly changing rifles and adding yet more gear to try and make them shoot better.

There seems to be a big trend towards heavy rifles with light recoiling cartridges where recoil is a non issue. You set the rifle on bags and a little whisper touch on the trigger and tiny little group. I think PCP air rifles have a lot to answer for.

Yet most stalking rifles have a reasonable level of recoil, and are light enough that you do need manage this. Video shows this in stark reality. My two take aways are

1) hold the rifle with a firm handshake type grip, and squeeze like a handshake. Not something limp wristed.

2) most of us are happy with a 12 bore. Most shotguns have more recoil than a rifle. And have you ever been really hurt by recoil. I think we have all had a bit of red ness or black bruising, worse still a whack in the eye with a scope.

Have a watch - some good hints and tips.

Really interesting vid that
