Red stag stalking Scotland

When’s the best time of the season to stalk Red stags in Scotland? I’ve been offered dates end of September and start of October this year. Want advice before I book

There's usually a bit more action towards the end of the stag season, so if its unaccompanied stalking I'd tend to to go as late as possible
If it's accompanied I wouldn't worry too much regarding one week or the other

Would I have more chance in getting a beast when the rut is well under way or just at the start of the rut? It will be accompanied stalking in the highlands

The only thing I could add is that if you are planning on making a week or fortnight of it and doing other stuff as well there may be more scope for fishing in September, the trout will all be closed on 6th October for example. This may not be a factor for you but worth keeping in mind.

As you will have a stalker with you then on balance your chances of a deer are probably about the same - weather and wind and simple good luck are probably more of a factor than a few days here or there.

I wrote the following report and the day was mid to late September, I can't remember the exact date:

Another forum member was out a few days earlier for a MacNab, this was the end of the 2nd week in September

So while this doesn't prove anything it does demonstrate that you can have great days out in September.

Being accompanied highland stalking the success rate is likely to be extremely high, regardless of the point in the rut. If it's trophy based stalking then probably better targeted early in the rutting season to help avoid any associated antler damage from sparring. Best speaking to stalker / guide that you shall be using and asking their advice.

I’m going 2nd week in October and really looking forward to the stalking ect! But not looking forward to the 450 mile drive each way. Never shot a red stag so if I get one I will be very pleased booked 3 days stalking. Hope you have a great time.

Enjoy the whole experience....nothing like hearing them roar in the Scottish hills.im going up the week before you but only 365 miles each way..

Could I ask what outfitters/agents you have used? PM me if you want too.
I’ve got about 400 mile trip each way myself. I’m planning on leaving 3.30am, make the most of the quiet roads

I am up in my areas in the far highlands again this season. Late September through to the 20th October. You wont go far wrong with Red Stag or Sika. Generally the Red rut is in full swing by or around the first week of October.
