Remington 700 timber stock options.

Hi all, I have a Remington 700 bdl in 30-06 but poor stock fit means accuracy could be better. The stock is too short so I get hammered by recoil which is an easy fix but the pistol grip is too small, my little finger just floats under the pistol grip and my trigger finger wants to go too far through the guard if you get what I mean? I must be a freak because I get this problem with a lot of stocks like they are just too small for me. Thought there would be plenty aftermarket stocks but not finding much in wood, it's the "lux" model so nicely blued/engraved and don't particularly want a synthetic stock certainly not a target type one. Any ideas?

Have a look at the KKC line up, definitely good for a comfortable grip if you have big hands. GRS also do something similar although I’ve never seen one in person so can’t comment on the fit. Boyd’s another option?

If I were in your place I’d take the buttplate off and get a recoil pad thick enough to get a good length for you . Then for the pistol grip I’d get a piece of maple or some other contrasting colored wood and make a sort of extension pg cap . Just my thoughts on your issue ! Oh yeah and if you do that don’t remove any wood have the additions fitted to the gun so if you wanna sell it down the road you can put the original buttplate and grip cap back on and they look okay .

Hi, thanks for that, a wooden stock that fitted would do me fine but failing that might try a Boyds laminate. Bit more weight might help with recoil too.
A good recoil pad such as Limbsaver might well help but not with the trigger finger issue. I can recommend the Boyd’s stocks - meet the Remmy twins - one in triple deuce and the other in .308. I know they come in different lengths as the two I bought are… err… different lengths - between the thumbhole and trigger…

Thanks for that, seen the Boyd's and very tempted, don't particularly like the forend cutouts look like a hidey hole for bits of crap but other than that look great. How do you find the pistol grip? The factory stock is just all round too small for my hand. Do the Boyds have any spacers or whatever to alter length of pull?

The only other option I liked was Klinsky walnut thumbhole but they only seem to do short action.

I held off buying thumbhole for a long time but Edgar Bros were doing a clearout at silly prices so I speculated and bought two. They were a simple perfect fit drop ins and the barrel channel on both is wide enough for a fairly heavy barrel profile so plenty of room for my “normal” barrels. Never had an issue with the vents. The pistol grip is a generous fit (I have big hands) but a small criticism is the surface where your palm grips is very smooth and slippy; as can be seen on the pics I added a couple of turns of amalgamating tape and have since replaced it with a paracord whipping. Not sure about spacers but I have Limbsavers on both…
I hve recommended them to pals and they have been very pleased with their purchases.
I seem to recall a Thread on buying Boyd’s from America - not very difficult but may be slow…

Okay thanks for all that, very tempted. If it takes a limbsaver pad that'll be fine. Surprised how cheap they are. Not what I was after but will think about it for a bit and probably buy.

At Heym SR20, had actually considered this option, I made an air rifle stock from a bit American black walnut and turned out okay. Have you any more info to share on how you made the stock? Timber and tools used etc?

Edit: Oh I get it, click on pictures, will read now, thanks.

It’s actually very rewarding and just take your time. Make it a little oversized at first as it won’t be correct, but you can then slim it down.

If your hands are as big as I suspect from your description, you'll likely find boyds pistol grip too slim. GRS are really good, although on my 700's I have a magpul hunter and a bell & carlson varmint

Yes quite enjoyed the air rifle stock, the main problem was without paying a lot I could only get 50mm thick timber, this was borderline at best. I routed all the inletting.

Get two 50mm thick boards and a thinner 10mm and laminate them together with something like West Systems Epoxy. Ideally you would use a vacuum bag, but good clamps work well.

Better yet is to keep your eyes on the auctions. They often have rifle blanks for sale. Some will go for silly money, but most are pretty reasonable.

Yes could see this working in boring straight grained walnut, maybe get 2 planks at say 32mm thickness and glue together meaning the join is right down the center. Read your full post it's just how little time I get for these sorts of things nowadays but really like the idea and confident I could make something usable.

Boyd’s stocks are very good. I don’t think it accumulates more crap than the channel itself. Shouldn’t be dragging it behind you 😉

Work on your shooting technique or hold. Unless you are abnormally large in height or have monkey arms, the standard stock is a good size.

Just add some spacers and attach an adjustable butt pad. Dead easy did it on my sons .22lr Annie.
