Rifle Scope and Rings

Morning all

Taken advice from quite a few of you from my first post and have booked some days stalking.

I’ve just picked up a pre owned Swarovski z4 3-12x50 scope and when the time comes I’m looking at Tikka T3x Lite in .270, from reading on here it’s a good calibre and rifle and I have shot one in 22-250 and it was a lovely gun.

On my current target centrefire rifle I run a Sphur one piece mount but feel it may be abit bulky on the stalking rifle what rings/mount would work well?

Would the Burris xtr be up to the job?

I have used Sports Match scope rings on my .270 for 8 years, before they were on the .243 for 5 years "same pair"
last time they came off was in the summer when 1 rail screw had become loose so I stripped it down re did the med Loctite and dialled it back in. They were £50.00 at the time.

I would be tempted to put a picatinny rail on it, then use Warne QR rings. Never had any issues with Warne, the non QR version you need three hands to fit though!

Great scope! Don’t get a 270 in ‘lite’! Esp if only used to 22-250.

But if any of the machining of the rifle or the mount is off centre the scopes internal adjustment may not be able to take up the slack.

Could never put rings on my rifle that sat at a 45 deg angle, just not right

Great scope! Don’t get a 270 in ‘lite’! Esp if only used to 22-250.

I have shot larger calibres however my main centrefire is .223.
I do however have a 45/70 that has a fair old kick on it so not new to recoil but thanks for the advice

Ok fair enough then. But still in ‘lite’, the 270 can get bad on the muzzle flip, although tamed with a good mod and not cutting the barrel under 24” it’s not bad

Thanks for the help, I’m not set on a lite it’s just the Tikka seems to have a good reliable reputation and readily available at an affordable cost, plenty seem to show up second hand too.
Any recommendations on moderators?

Not getting a ‘lite’ in 270 wasn’t so much about you being man enough for the recoil, but the 270 in addition to fair recoil, does ‘flip’ more than ‘shove’, so a barrel of absolute min. 22” IMHO is a must, also to get decent performance out of that long case, otherwise might as well buy something else. Also, a good mod such as F&D’s new range, just handled one, WOW! Shooting a ‘flipper’ off a bipod also isn’t great, so bear in mind what shooting style and supports you expect to use

A good T3, although not my thing, is hard to beat for a quality and reliable rifle you can upgrade bits on here and there. Most mods are good these days, I’d go DPT or the new F&D personally

I've always used Sportsmatch on my .270

Cheap, simple and no problems at all.
