Rifle Stock Refinishing: Step-by-step

Another short pictorial showing the refinishing process of a rifle stock. There are many ways of doing this, this is just my preferred way.

The stock arrived as shown. It had previously had a dose of Nitromors, which didn't work.

The first step was to clean the chequering with paint thinner and a brass brush, to remove all the old Nitromors and general crap that was stuck in there.
Then, the intricate parts were scraped with a razor and the whole stock sanded with P120.

The stock was then sprayed with water to raise the grain, allowed to dry and then sanded again with P240, taking care to not round over any sharp corners and edges.
Once sanded, the stock was stained with Vandyke crystals dissolved in water - a traditional way of colouring wood.

Once the stain had dried, the first coat of oil was applied and buffed in. The customer requested a satin finish, so I opted for a Hardwax oil - a water-resistant, durable, natural finish designed for high-end furniture.
Several coats were applied, allowing the oil to penetrate the wood before being buffed smooth.

Once the final coat of oil was dry, the stock was given a protective coat of wax and is ready to be returned to the customer.

Nice work and a great example of the work involved to get it right.

Funnily enough my most satisfying re-finish was also an Anschutz 1432 stock with loads of fiddle back figuring. I went for a much lighter honey colour and oil finish.
