Rifles and night optics for foxing

I was having a little practice with my 22-250 and when my son was shooting I walked over to the car for something. I stopped about 30yds behind him on the way back and in all honesty, it didn’t sound any louder than the 17HMR. I was actually very surprised at how quiet it was from such a relatively short distance.
Unmoderated is probably a different matter altogether, but as the OP is using a moderated 270 then I suggest it will be a lot less of a disturbance than he assumes it to be.
My suggestion, for what it’s worth, would be to stick a second hand rear add-on on the 270 and spend the bulk of his budget on a thermal monocular.
I’ve just bought an ex-demo in excellent condition for £500 to use as a second unit for when my son is with me, it has a better spec than my usual thermal and cost around a third of what I paid a couple of years ago. ☹️

Thermal spotter absolutely essential.
I am bias but a .204 good moddy and factory ammo. You could get away with a Photon one on sale here at present with a good IR torch. That will enable you to shoot anything up to 200 yds.
If you have the cash it would be worth getting a Zulus suggest you DM some SD members for opinion.
If your walking out a good pair of quad sticks are also essential.
Couple of squeakers handy.
If you don't go .204 then .223 would be perfectly adequate.
Just choose a light rifle with an adjustable check piece.
D
Does a pair of quad sticks have 8 legs? 😘🙂👍

I wouldn’t want to be using a .270 with a rear add on, or even a conventional nv or thermal scope, as your eye is nearer the back of the scope to be able to view the screen.

If you’ve got a less than perfect shooting position as often happens, make sure you’ve got something to stop the bleeding 🤣 Or be prepared for concussion or a sudden headache. 🤔

Either way, you’re unlikely to see the strike.

Calibre-wise… depending on the availability of ammo near you, .204, .222, .223,:22-250. Discount the .204 if you have muntjac, CWD, roe depending on where you are. An adjustable cheekpiece or a cheek pad make life easier. Picatinny rail.

As for a scope… a DNT/ Zulus (the onboard IR is good) or an Alpex … both come up secondhand.

Don’t squeak or use the caller too hard/too often… but then it’s a learning game and you’ll never stop. 🤣

Cheers

Agree with your first line, some on here sound like they have been foxing at night since job was a lad (Not)

Remember OP said NOISE IS AN ISSUE.
.270Win, average powder charge 60 grains.
.222 Rem, average powder charge 20 grains. disregarding a supersonic crack, which charge will make the boom?

I shoot tika 223 rem with wildcat mod and a pard oo8.
223 rem easy to buy amo, easy to shoot ,and cheap to shoot. Devastating round for anything ,I even use for shooting magpies and crows although sometimes there’s nothing to pickup.
I shoot mine next to the house and they never hear the shots .
Perfect set up Tika 223 rem hik micro Alpex and a thermal spotter (monocular) I’ve got the new hik micro hadbrok binos but I think I prefer the monocular.
Ps got a fox last night 🦊😁

Also agre with the first line. I have used a Pard on a 308, no recoil eyebrow issue but trying to see the strike and retain the sight picture is for me impossible. Case of squeeze the trigger then where did the fox go?

You already have a moderated .270 so get the .270 Win 95-100 grain varmint loads and stick a Pard on the back of the rifle the early ones go for £200 second hand now. It might well be quiet enough. I have one of my 3x .270s with a mod and it is sighted in at 100m with these loads.

Ive always struggled finding the lighter grain loads where I am....130 seems to be the lightest, but Ill keep looking. that might be a good solution while I wait for my variation to go through. Something to try out anyways.

What exactly is wrong with what you have ??

God knows I shot more foxes than I could count with a motorcycle headlight strapped to my heed !!

Stick a sniper hog on your scope and get a warm jacket on and sit out like everyone else does / did
I think the main issue is my lack of experience with the foxes at the minute. Trying a combination of you tube university and just spending time out there. I still keep an eye out for the foxes while stalking, just not something Ive spent a lot of time dedicated to. Lots of good advice on there so far though that I didnt really consider. Happy to try anything at the minute, just really want to help the landowner out!

.270Win 2365 Joules @ 300 yards.
.222 Rem 517 Joules @ 300 yards.
This is probably where the FEO's who search for arguments against what you feel you "Need", get there "Overkill" statements from.

I am currently using a quarter bore with 75 grain V Max, (Probably the nearest equating to a .243), noise is one of the reasons I am awaiting a .222.
