Safest way to get a rifle up a high seat?

When I was in hospital after failing to miss a Humber Super Snipe with my motorbike one of the beds in the ward had a guy in it who had slipped off the bottom rung of a ladder. He'd broken his ankle, and septicaemia set in. He fought the surgeon who wanted to amputate his leg every step (see what I did there?) of the way, so they were chasing the infection up his leg. When I met him he had just had his leg taken off below the knee, 3 weeks later it was above the knee, just before I discharged at 6 weeks it was at the hip, and 8 weeks after I met him he died.

All I can add to this is make sure what ever you use is safe and as soon as you think it's getting unsafe take it down. A very good friend that has been shooting for years fell out of one of his seats and fractured his neck he was led at the bottom of the seat for some time before being able to stumble back to the vehicle.

A worrying sign of the times when it takes 85 posts to work out how to climb a highseat. Perhaps we should have a thread on how to walk from the car to the highseat safely. Makes you wonder how all the old stalkers managed for all those years without the collective wisdom of the SD.

Too true T. Used to climb the tree, sit on a branch and pull the musket up with baler twine. All this safeguarding is a laugh a minute, but that's modern stalking. Talk the angle to death before you do it. Just used to get on with it from the start 66 years ago. 🙄

We had sheet ice here last night took me ten minutes to get from the house down the drive to the garage, drove home 1 am but up the drive and it still took me five minutes to get from the car sliding to the front door. Be careful out there.

Hopefully you will get 68 replies giving you different ways to tackle the ice. From 3 tons of rock salt to the assistance of sherpa Tensing.

Did what you always do I took it carefully. Taking a neighbours 14 y/o out with me on Saturday evening as he asked through his mum, just have kitted him out with Sorrel boots and my old Canadian wool trapper coat for the 4 hour sitting session, he will either love it or go back to fishing.

As many others have said, unload, sling rifle over shoulder and up ye go.

However.... I would not do this with a regular sling, as you can bet the darn thing will slip off your shoulder or something, get in the way, you'll overcorrect and Newton's law will kick in.

If you want a safe way to do this, get yourself a sling with a chest strap, that way the rifle cannot slip around and cause bother. I have one of these, swear by it for my airgun (still waiting on DDC to sign my bloody FAC off 😖)
